The 5th graders began the unit by learning about what is energy. Students performed several experiments to learn about electricity and how we use it in our everyday lives. Then students were introduced to different ways we get energy, mostly being from fossil fuels and alternative energy sources. While students are experimenting in Science, we are also covering the topic of global warming in our reading lessons. As we read articles about global warming we discuss what is the purpose of the author? To inform, persuade or entertain? Students learned strategies as they plow through information and decide is this real? What can I believe? Students took diligent notes about everything we read. After the students explored opinions for every facet of global warming they were asked to decide: What do you believe? How can you share this and convince an audience? Students then used their gathered information to support their opinions and wrote persuasive essays that they have to share with all of you!
