The 6th graders have been investigating how a healthy environment affects a community. How does building garden beds, stewarding school forests and mutual aid for the homeless increase peace and harmony in a community?
Students engaged with Roots and Shoots curriculum to create a project that will benefit people, animals and the environment. Students decided to create a multi-faceted project that includes revitalizing Fair Oak’s 5+ garden beds, caring for the 30 plus trees on campus, gathering winter coats and blankets, providing food and resources for local homeless people in Redwood City. Project also includes finding a location for an off-site community garden.
The garden beds were very dry and hardpan. There are root systems growing into beds and irrigation system is complicated and not full functional. We may have to install a new system or handwater.
