A 7th Grade Poetry Project
The 7th-grade students spent several weeks learning about protest and spoken word poetry. They watched a number of spoken word artists perform their poetry - famous poets as well as artists who are around our students’ age and grade. They learned that through poetry, they can describe their identities and culture, their heritage, and their lives in general. They learned that poetry is an outlet for all kinds of expressions, passions, and emotions. They learned that poetry can serve as a platform to right wrongs and gather solidarity about an issue that is important to them. Students started with a template to guide their thinking when starting their writing. They then revised and transformed their formulaic poems into their very own creations.
THE STUDENTS WORKED VERY HARD ON THIS PROJECT AND REPORTED THAT THEY FOUND TALENTS AND COURAGE THAT THEY HAD NO IDEA THEY POSSESSED! We are excited for you to enjoy their final pieces!
