Welcome to 7th/8th Computer Science!
Hello Scholars and Families!
My name is Ms. Sumnani and this is my third year at Compass Rose Academy as a Founding Teacher. This is my fourth year in education overall and I hold an active Core Subjects teaching credential. As an original polar bear, I taught sixth and seventh grade math for the past two years; however, I am truly excited to be the Computer Science teacher this year! Additionally, I am also teaching 9th Grade Advanced Journalism/Yearbook and I am one of the Musical Theater co-teachers as part of our middle school Enrichment program.
I am a Southern California native and graduated with my Bachelor's degree from UCLA, the invention place of the internet. I am currently only one course shy of completing my Master's degree at Johns Hopkins University. I LOVE technology, am a proud Tech NERD, and you can often find me troubleshooting technology issues on campus. Outside of school, I am a professional musician and enjoy composing and being on recording projects. I spend my free time singing with the chamber choir Sonoro, traveling, and overcommitting to projects because I simply love to "do."
I look forward to coding and creating with everyone this year!
At Compass Rose Academy, we believe all students should be equipped with 21st-century skills in an ever-changing global environment. Computer programming is the foundation of all of the technology that we use and is a career field that is extremely high in both demand and starting salary (just under $70,000). According to Code.org, in 2017, there were under 50,000 Computer Science graduates. However, there are over 500,000 open computing positions in the United States. In 2020, the available seats for this position will exceed qualified applicants by a million.
Teaching students to translate design into code equips them with a comprehensive toolkit for problem solving skills, as they troubleshoot (debug) and develop creative solutions. This is a skill that holds deep relevancy in daily life, and is the foundation of our school's commitment to building globally-aware critical thinkers.
Our introductory computer science course at Compass Rose Academy will involve students using HTML and CSS to design web pages and create animations and games, engage in the Design Thinking process to develop solutions related to data and society, and explore the role of hardware platforms and sensory input/output in computing, using Circuit Playground.
Course Grading Breakdown
Classwork Attendance and Participation: 70%
End of Unit Assessments: 30%
Current Unit: Problem Solving & Computing
Problem Solving and Computing is a highly interactive and collaborative introduction to the field of computer science, as framed within the broader pursuit of solving problems. You’ll practice using a problem solving process to address a series of puzzles, challenges, and real world scenarios. Next, you’ll learn how computers input, output, store, and process information to help humans solve problems. The unit concludes with a project in which you design an application that helps solve a problem of your choosing.
