Columbus Academy offers students a variety of digital interfaces for learning, and most of our students will start with an Apple iPad - which are available in classrooms for PreK to 4th grade, and from 5th to 12th grades our students will be assigned a CA iPad for each individual's schoolwork use.
Apple MacBook laptops are available to be loaned out by students during each school day from our Libraries and from computer carts deployed across all school divisions, and in certain classrooms there are MacBook computers specially set up to teach specific classes. Our Librarians and faculty members oversee the MacBook requests based on the students' learning needs. Upper School Students are also allowed to bring their personally-owned laptops (BYOD) to school to conduct their school work, with the understanding that they must adhere to the Columbus Academy Responsible Acceptable Use policy.
Most classrooms also have BenQ panels or TV carts connected to Apple TVs that support AirPlay from their iPads and MacBooks, and since 2023, Columbus Academy have been replacing our classroom projectors with BenQ interactive flat panels that allows faculty and students to not only share their screens but also interact with the panel's Google apps via touch or styluses.
Upper School students will be given the ability to access printers on their computers across campus, so they can print out class-related documents such as project reports, class assignments, and presentation materials.
The Columbus Academy Tech Office support a variety of iPads across the school campus, primarily 8th to 11th generation iPad tablets. PreK and Lower School students (up to 4th Grade) will use iPads within their classrooms, when instructed by their teacher. All our iPads should have grade-level specific apps pre-installed in these classroom iPads.
Students from 5th Grade to 12th Grade will be assigned an iPad that they can take home, enclosed in a case with a keyboard & trackpad on its cover. These iPads will includes a standard set of apps used for classwork & learning, and students will be allowed to use the "Self-Service" app to browse and install apps from the Academy-licensed software catalog.
If you need an app that is not available, please ask your teacher or advisor contact the Tech Office (techhelp@columbusacademy.org) for assistance.
The Columbus Academy school libraries host a number of laptop carts that have MacBooks charged and ready to be loaned out by students for projects or class work. The CA MacBook computers do not leave the school and must be returned to the respective librarian or classroom teacher from where they are checked out, at the end of each school day.
Students using the CA MacBooks will be allowed to browse and install Academy-licensed software via the "Managed Software Center" app catalog. If you need an app that is not available in our catalog, please have your teacher or advisor reach out to the Tech Office (techhelp@columbusacademy.org) for assistance.
Once a iPad or MacBook is connected to the Columbus Academy's secured Wi-Fi network, they will be able to screen-cast or mirror their screen to BenQ Interactive Flat Panels or HDTVs found in classrooms. We connect Apple TVs to the panels which allow users to AirPlay (screen mirroring) to them from Apple devices.
For more steps on how to use AirPlay or Screen Mirroring, please review this Apple Knowledgebase article.
MacBooks checked out of the Columbus Academy libraries are already pre-configured for printing to a select pool of printers associated with their division.
Upper School students bringing in their own laptops to campus will need to connect their devices to the CA secured wireless network and request information from the librarians to access printers in the Upper School.
