{Ball State University} DesignWorks Summer Academy
Participants spend much of their time in the College of Architecture and Planning’s design studios, taking part in studio work. It’s a lot like our First-Year Program for Ball State freshmen in that it offers a taste of a wide range of design activities. There are some evening sessions as well, but evenings free of programmed activities allow you a chance to see what the rest of college life is like.
{Ball State University} Youth Interior Design Forum (Interior Design Summer Workshop)
The Youth Interior Design Forum (YIDF) is a workshop open to high school students of any grade level and gives them the opportunity to experience interior design firsthand. We also encourage graduating seniors who plan to attend Ball State University in fall of 2025 attend this workshop as well to have a smooth transition to college and have a jump start. The workshop blends tradition and innovation in creative learning, covering areas in applied critical thinking and exploration with materials. During the studio time, students explore the fundamentals of 2D and 3D concepts, learn basic drawing and illustration skills, play with color use and light effects, and learn how interior environments affect human behavior. Upon completion, students will have a portfolio of work (a required component for the application for many accredited college interior design programs) and an official certificate of completion.

Are you passionate about architecture? Do you dream about designing your own building? Architects combine the study of materials, history, aesthetics, physiology, and psychology to produce beautiful, functional architecture. BGSU’s Exploring Architecture camp is an amazing opportunity to learn about the field of architecture, gain real-world knowledge and skills, and meet other students and professionals equally excited about architecture. The camp covers careers ranging from exhibition design, stage design, environmental design, space planning, information design, and virtual space design. Campers also get a peek into BGSU’s Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture*.

Pre-College Architecture is an intensive and immersive summer program that engages high school students in the creative energy and speculative culture of the college-level experience, in studying the discipline of architecture. Pre-College Architecture introduces design practice, creative problem solving and critical thinking to young designers through a complex matrix of programming, pushing curiosity and by providing a strong basis for architectural education. High School Design Studio focuses on teaching students the fundamentals of design and sketching in order to set a foundation in the fields of architecture, interior design, industrial design, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning.
{Cornell University} Introduction to Architecture
The Introduction to Architecture Program is an intensive six-week course in Cornell's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) that introduces high school and college students to architectural ideas, principles, and methods of exploring architectural problems in a studio setting. Through a graduated sequence of exercises culminating in a final project, you'll study architectural concepts of space, form, function, environment, and technology. During field trips, you'll investigate contemporary architecture within the context of Upstate New York sites of production, fabrication, and resources.

The major goal of the summer workshop is to simulate the information, skill, and intensity required for an architectural education and to give clear insight into the practice of architecture. With this experience, it will be possible for the participants to make an informed career decision about architecture and its related disciplines.

The Architecture + Art Summer Design Academy is an exciting hands-on learning experience that combines design creativity, historical perspective, technical excellence, social responsibility and environmental leadership – with plenty of time for bringing your ideas to life. The week-long program offers a curriculum with a variety of studio, seminar and field experiences, extracurricular activities and field trips.
{Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute} Architecture Career Discovery Program
The Architecture Career Discovery Program is a two-week intensive on campus introduction to architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. The core of this course is studio work. In studio, students are immersed in a rigorous creative process that starts with the development of abstract models, and ultimately leads to the design of an exciting and innovative architectural proposition. Critique and evaluation of studio work is continuous, occurring in one-on-one discussion with the instructor and in larger group reviews with invited architectural critics. Studio work is complemented by a series of lectures and field trips. Lectures discuss the broader context of architectural practice; contemporary projects and practitioners; as well as more technical concerns such as drawing and model making. Field trips visit museums, where students learn about other types of creative practices, and significant works of contemporary architecture. High school students entering 10th, 11th and 12th grade in the fall who are considering studies in architecture or design with a curiosity about the world in which we live, as well as an interest in art culture, and new ideas are encouraged to register.

Are you considering a career in architecture or design? Are you working on your college application and portfolio? Or are you simply curious about what it is like to be an architect? The Summer Springboard architecture course for high school students introduces architectural ideas, design principles, and methods of exploring problems of the built environment in a collaborative studio setting. While working on a design project you will learn about the academic path to an architectural degree, the day-to-day work of an architect, and the career opportunities. Excursions may include visits to architecturally significant buildings, design studios and top-tier engineering and architecture firms.

Architecture combines practical considerations of function and sustainability with a poetics of form and meaning. Although architecture may take years to master, those who study it in college have usually harbored an intense curiosity since at least their early teens. This introductory studio with accompanying lectures and field trips will give you a broader, deeper understanding of the subject and also the opportunity to develop a portfolio for use in applying to schools of architecture should you eventually wish to do so.

Discover Architecture is a two-week, residential, pre-college program offered by the Illinois School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. The purpose of the program is to introduce high-school students and recent graduates to the discipline of architecture both as a profession and as a field of academic endeavor. Students will learn about architectural drawing, physical modeling, freehand sketching, and other tools of the architectural trade. Upon completion, each student leaves not only with this knowledge, but with drawings and photographs to form the basis of his/her portfolio.

{University of Massachusetts Amherst} Summer Design Academy
The UMass Amherst Summer Design Academy provides an opportunity for high school students interested in architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and urban design the opportunity to experience the professions through the creative challenges of a university design program. The Design Academy's interactive educational experiences include drawing and design exercises, hands-on building and model-making activities, visits to local design firms and construction sites, as well as lectures, discussions, and design reviews with visiting architects and designers. The three-week intensive will be composed of two parts: Week One will provide an introduction to the design disciplines of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Urban Design through a series of short design projects. Weeks Two and Three will focus on developing conceptual approaches to particular design disciplines, through hands on exercises. All students will learn design thinking, drawing, modelmaking, and presentation skills. Reviews will be held with visiting design professionals and faculty. Workload is intense! Six hours in class per day plus additional studio time is required. Three (3) credits will be offered.

ArcStart is a three-week long residential program for high school students that offers students the opportunity to explore the built environment firsthand through an introduction to architectural design. Geared toward those who are considering or who have already enrolled in an architecture program, participants not only learn architectural history but also the skills and responsibilities required in contemporary architecture practice. During the 13-day program, students participate in design studios, architecture seminars and field trips to see good architecture first hand. Career Discovery is intended to help participants decide whether or not they want to pursue architecture in college, and, if so, how they should prepare during their junior and senior years of high school. If they come committed to the field, Career Discovery will introduce them to studying architecture at the college level, giving them a jump start over those entering the major their freshman year of college.
