在英國讀書時，一天來了一位著名的作家當客席教授。他的講解精彩絕倫，在講台上盡展個人魅力。當時我被他的才華迷倒了，課後追上前去想跟他握手。怎料他卻不好意思的把手插進口袋。隔天上課，我偷偷地留意他的手，原來他有咬指甲的習慣。十個指頭泛黃，非常難看，跟他筆挺的西裝，甚至教授的身份成了可笑的對比。
我們大都認同世上是沒有完美的人。最強的人或有軟弱的一面；最大方得體的人或有羞愧難堪的過去；最坦白的人或有需要隱藏的秘密。可是當別人有過失或不完美時，我們卻覺得有言論自由去作出挑剔或批評。畫中是Maxi。 主人跟我說，可能由於他被遺棄時飽受飢餓的折磨，現在他一吃就不能停下來。不知道他過去的人，會誤以為Maxi 很貪婪，或 主人很刻薄沒有給他吃‧我把Maxi的無奈和悲傷表現在畫裡，希望大家在同情他的同時，也能看到自身的不完美。
When I was studying in England, one day a famous writer came as a visiting professor. His speech was impressive and his charisma shone on the podium. At that time, I was fascinated by his talent. After class, I caught up with the visiting professor and wanted to shake hands with him. Awkwardly, he put his hands into his pockets with discomfiture. The next day in class I secretly observed his hands and I discovered that he had a habit of biting nails. The nails were utterly short, yellowish and deformed, and were ridiculously in contrast to his crisp suit and even his status as a professor.
Most of us would agree that no one is perfect in the world. The strongest human may have a weak side; the most decent soul may have a shameful past; the most honest person may have a hidden secret. But when we see faults or imperfections in the others, we feel we have the freedom of speech to comment or criticize them.
The protagonist in the painting is Maxi. His master told me that he was starving when he was found abandoned, and since then whenever he eats he cannot stop. People who do not know his past may mistakenly think that Maxi is greedy or that his master is mean not to feed him well. I express Maxi's helplessness and sorrow in the painting, hoping that by looking at Maxi we learn to empathize, and at the same time we see our own imperfections.
Cuando estudiaba en Inglaterra, un día vino como profesor visitante un escritor famoso. Su discurso fue impresionante y su carisma brilló en el podio. En ese momento, yo estaba fascinada por su talento. Después de clase, corrí detrás del profesor visitante y quise estrecharle la mano. Torpemente, se metió las manos en los bolsillos con desconcierto. Al día siguiente en clase observé a escondidas sus manos y descubrí que tenía la costumbre de morderse las uñas. Las uñas eran completamente cortas, amarillentas y deformadas, y contrastaban ridículamente con su impecable traje e incluso con su condición de profesor.
La mayoría de nosotros estaríamos de acuerdo en que nadie es perfecto en el mundo. El ser humano más fuerte puede tener un lado débil; el alma más decente puede tener un pasado vergonzoso; la persona más honesta puede tener un secreto escondido. Pero cuando vemos faltas o imperfecciones en los demás, sentimos que tenemos la libertad de expresión para comentarlo o criticarlo, directamente.
El protagonista del cuadro es Maxi. Su dueña me dijo que estaba muerto de hambre cuando lo encontraron abandonado y, desde entonces, cada vez que Maxi come no puede parar. Las personas que no conocen su pasado pueden pensar erróneamente que Maxi es codicioso o que su dueña es mala al no alimentarle bien. Expreso la impotencia y el dolor de Maxi en el cuadro, esperando que al mirar a Maxi, aprendamos a sentir empatía y, al mismo tiempo veamos nuestras propias imperfecciones.
