CDE’s Schools of Choice 2021 Equity Convening

Applying Equity Frameworks to Advance Systemic Change in Education

Hosted by Colorado League of Charter School in collaboration with Colorado Association of Charter School Authorizers

This site was created to collect and organize the materials and resources shared and generated at the 1-day virtual convening that brought together charter school leaders and authorizers to discuss how best to leverage frameworks when making systemic decisions around school improvement and policy change that advance equity.

The frameworks and topics for this event included:

Defining equity can be a complex task that includes better serving marginalized populations. The Equity Convening design is informed by an Advisory Panel that has adopted the following definition of equity to guide our work together.

Equity in education begins with an awareness and acknowledgement of internal and external intersectional, systemic oppression and its consequences. This awareness compels action aimed at shifting traditional conditions (beliefs, policies, power dynamics, practices, etc.) that hinder student success, achievement, and well-being based on identity and circumstance. Equitable practices are rooted in a framework of intentional design, practice, and resourcing aimed at the transformation of power, co-creation, fairness, inclusion (including inclusion in rigorous instruction), and belonging that ultimately results in equitable outcomes and experiences for all students regardless of race, ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, ability or any other factor that shapes identity.

It is with this equity definition in mind that the Colorado Department of Education in partnership with the Colorado League of Charter Schools and the Colorado Association of Charter School Authorizers encourage you to join this important equity work.

"equity is the distribution of opportunity and the resources to take advantage of those opportunities"
