Q: WHAT IS SPEAK?
A: SPEAK is an organization founded by Beth Onses & Chelsea Hackett. Their mission is to support and celebrate the voices of all young women and girls.
MISSION STATEMENT: Envisioning a world where all young women and girls are heard, valued, and affirmed. A world that benefits from their unique contributions, one where they are safe to express themselves fully, and are free to co-author an equitable, survivable, and thrive-able future.
In the Fall of 2022 I had the pleasure of co-facilitating alongside Beth Osnes & Chelsea Hackett for my Master's Thesis. Over the course of 13 week's we began creating our performance for the United Nations Conference on human rights and climate change. Our performance was apart of the plenary closing ceremony. Watch the recap video here! (Right Here, Right Now Global Summit)
Working together to brainstorm freely, and creatively! Each week was a time to discuss world issues relating to climate change in hopes to get the youth thinking about way's to use their voice. "A Journal for My Voice" was a journal to accompany them on their journey towards that "Vocal Empowerment.” Filled with images for coloring, illustrating, and reflection. As well as a note to “keep in mind” for oneself to carry into the coming week. Writing a personal declaration of their voice and impact in the community was very important in affirmation excercises!
Our show was presented at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, CO on December of 2022 as apart of SPEAK and the Global Climate Summit. Performances ranged from (Shadow Puppets, Speech Bubbles, and Singing. All for climate action and climate justice!
