FIRST B LETTER GRADE IN CARVER HISTORY!!!

Scholars and families,

We are so proud to announce that the Louisiana Department of Education's SPS for 2022-23 showed Carver earning a "B" Letter Grade -- the first in our school's proud history. That distinction is the result of our entire school community showing up every day with our core values: Achievement, Kindness, Responsibility, Determination, Teamwork, and Enthusiasm. It's an accomplishment years in the making and one that reflects the hard work of so many Carver scholars, teachers, and teammates! Congratulations!!

We also celebrate:

We look forward to a strong week before the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Carver Families! Our scholars have been selected to participate in The 50 Dollar Study, a youth cash transfer program run by Rooted Schools. All scholars have the opportunity to complete an application to participate in this FREEno-strings-attached, research project where kids are given $2000 ($50/wk for 40 weeks) so researchers can track their spending habits.

Here's how it works:

Want to learn more?

We're grateful for the chance to work with Rooted Schools and participate in this study. We know the impact of $2000 and we're thankful to be able to share this opportunity with all our families.

Thanks!

UNIFORM POLICY REMINDER

As a reminder, scholars should report to school in full and complete uniform. Full uniform includes the following items:

BOTTOMS: Khaki or Plaid pants ONLY

TOP: Carver T-shirt, College T-shirt, White Polo with GWC Logo, Black Senior Polo with GWC Logo, or White button-down Oxford with GWC Logo

OUTERWEAR: scholars can only wear solid (one color), college, or Carver outerwear

2024 POSSE SCHOLARS

Congratulations to our Class of 2024 Posse Semi-Finalists!

The Posse Foundation identifies, recruits, and trains individuals with extraordinary leadership potential. Posse scholars receive full-tuition leadership scholarships from Posse’s partner colleges and universities.

CELL PHONE POLICY

Cell phones have become increasingly distracting to the learning environment. We have experienced an increase in safety incidents and bullying that stem from inappropriate cell phone use on campus. Instead of focusing on teaching, teachers are competing for scholars' attention in classrooms. Our scholars do not yet understand that what they post on social media can have lasting effects on their futures. Alongside our parents and families, we take responsibility for teaching our scholars how to become more responsible and achieve the highest levels of academic success. By limiting access to their cell phones during the day, scholars will spend more time focusing on learning content and developing the social skills necessary for college success. We believe that our scholars can learn how to appropriately manage their cell phone use on campus when we explicitly teach them how to. This year, GWC will implement a tiered cell phone policy to help scholars build stronger academic and social habits.

ATHLETIC UPDATE

Finally, we want to update you on the status of the Carver football program. We were recently notified by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) that the remainder of our 2023 football season will be canceled. We know the impact will be felt throughout the school and the city. We are committed to ensuring all scholars still have the opportunity to perform and to be recognized.

The suspension of the football season is the result of an eligibility violation during our first football game (against St. Amant).  At the time, Carver was on probation for infractions accrued during the 22-23 school year. The consequence, a canceled season and 12-month suspensions for several coaches, is limited to football. This penalty had the potential to impact all teams. It will not.  All other Carver sports teams that were scheduled to compete this year will still compete and will be eligible to earn postseason honors.

In response to the canceled season, we are adjusting our plans for celebrating and honoring football players, co-curricular performers and our Homecoming Court. We fully intend to give them the spotlight they deserve despite the canceled football season. Homecoming and Senior Night will look different, but they will happen. We plan to release an updated schedule of events by Monday, September 25th.

Football scholars interested in playing another sport will have the opportunity to try out. We will also continue supporting players with strength training and conditioning in preparation for spring football. Study hall and ACT tutoring after school will still be heavily promoted.

For football scholars interested in transferring to another school, LHSAA has indicated waivers will be granted for individual player eligibility during an immediate window. New Orleans Public Schools (NOLAPS) manages all school enrollment. Once they let us know how they will run the transfer process, we will notify all football families. It’s important to note that, in accordance with NOLAPS rules, once a scholar transfers out of Carver they will not be able to come back this school year without a hardship transfer that is approved by NOLAPS.

Again, we share your disappointment. Please know that we will build this program back, and we look forward to proudly competing in 2024. If you are the parent or legal guardian of a football player and would like an individual meeting to discuss your next steps, please contact Cierra Sutton (cbsutton@collegiateacademies.org) to schedule an appointment.
