ChampalMUN 2021
Along with the current pandemic, several organizations and companies have faced an unexpected need to adapt to the circumstances. Following a personal hygiene protocol, limiting the number of circulating individuals, measures such as these were taken in order to make sure the citizens stay safe. Nearly five billion vaccine doses have been administered and almost two billion people are fully vaccinated, however COVID-19 cases continue to rise.
All areas have been affected by the pandemic, taking everyone by surprise. For this reason, various small businesses were forced to conclude all work, and bigger organizations underwent a crisis within the workers. Unable to anticipate such a situation, emergency meetings were required to decide the most suitable course of action, but unemployment proved to be practically unavoidable. Workplace absenteeism further leads to less productivity and lack of stock, making it more complex to economically support the government and citizens. On the other hand, due to decrease in income, consumers also changed their usual spending behavior. Additionally, services such as tourism and transportation have been put on hold or limited their usage.
ECOSOC soon shifted its focus to diminishing the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. The Council’s approach to responding to the pandemic has been “promoting a robust multilateral response guided by global solidarity,” as stated in ECOSOC’s response to COVID-19. This response includes a long-term view that puts the committee back on track to realize the SDGs and reduce vulnerabilities for future disasters. Therefore the 2030 agenda remained the most viable roadmap.
The HLPF in 2021 discussed Sustainable Development Goals 1 on no poverty, 2 on zero hunger, 3 on good health and well-being, 8 on decent work and economic growth, 10 on reduced inequalities, 12 on responsible consumption and production, 13 on climate action, 16 on peace, justice and strong institutions, and 17 on partnerships in depth. The Forum also considered the integrated, indivisible and interlinked nature of the Sustainable Development Goals. Ministers and other participants discussed the kind of policies and international cooperation to control the pandemic and its impact.
About the committee:
The pandemic has caused several issues, currently mankind is struggling to keep order in both health and economic matters. As a delegate of the United Nations Economic and Social Council your job is to come up with strategies to help reduce the economic damages that the pandemic left and is continuing to create. Each delegation has handled the pandemic differently and that is exactly the reason why it is important to compare solutions and strategies to find one that can be applied worldwide. Remember the importance of taking into consideration each delegation's beliefs and ideals, allowing to create a safe space to develop a suitable and viable resolution paper for this subject.
