Building Math Minds!

Welcome to the Math Intervention page at Porter's Point School!

My name is Paula Palermo. I've been working as a teacher in the public school system for over 20 years, primarily as a classroom teacher but most recently as a math interventionist. I love sharing my passion for mathematics with everyone, especially children, and it is my strong belief that ALL of us are mathematicians. Mathematics is so much MORE than just computation. Math is about patterns, relationships, creativity and exploration.

In our small group sessions, students receive instruction and practice in foundational math facts and skills as well as supplementation of current in-class unit material. I also like to infuse our sessions with Mindfulness practices which support self-compassion, self-regulation, positive self-talk and growth mindset ideas. All of these practices help our students do their best learning.

Please take a look at some of the activities that you can use to support your child at home. Likewise, you may want to read some of the articles I have shared about learning math. You may find some of these ideas and observations different from your personal experience as a child learning math. I hope you find them interesting and insightful!
