What does the counselor do?

All students at LES have access to the counseling program provided by the school counselor. The LES School Counseling and Guidance Plan is based on the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) Model. Below are the three areas in which students receive services from the counselor. At the bottom of the page you can find the classroom lessons calendar and more information about community resources.

Classroom Lessons

Monthly in each classroom
Lessons focus on elements from the 3 domains set forth by ASCA: academic, career, personal social
Topics: identifying & expressing feelings (pre-K & K), friendship (1st), coping skills for emotions (2nd), conflict resolution (3rd), citizenship (4th), personal responsibility (5th), academic goals & careers (6th)

Small Groups

Fall & Spring Sessions
Meet for a short period of time (6 weeks or less) on a weekly basis
Topics covered in the past: friendship and anxiety

Individual

Occurs as needed
Specifically tailored for the student's need

Colbert County Schools also partners with several outside agencies:

Riverbend Center for Mental Health provides an In-School Therapist who is on our campus one day a week to see students who qualify for these services.
The Healing Place provides small group counseling once a month for students coping with the grief.
Safe-Place provides good-touch bad-touch lessons to our students annually and meets one of the requirements set forth in Erin's Law. (The other standards are met through monthly
Local Area Churches: We have several area churches that assist us when we have a specific need for students. These needs include: clothing, cafeteria or supply fees, coats, & Christmas assistance.
Z Factor Leadership Program: Meets once a week with at-risk students providing leadership and social skills.
