About the Course
This course provides classroom preparation for the Project Management Professional (PMP)® credential examination in a systematic, accelerated format. Participants learn by studying the PMBOK® Guide directly, and by analytical and constructive tasks that simulate project management practice. The course also offers a range of planning resources and strategies that many PMP® examinees have found helpful, including tips on practice testing.
Since the PMBOK® Guide is authoritative and well-constructed, the primary material for this course is the guide itself. The course tackles all 10 of its Knowledge Areas. Each class session explains key concepts pertinent to the knowledge area under study, as well as offering tasks and/or practice test items to work through. Participants are to study about one chapter prior to each of the 12 sessions. Later sessions include systematic review.
This course addresses the PMBOK® Guide – Sixth Edition. This is the first to incorporate substantial guidance on agile project management. Thus, it is a course "about" agile, in the sense of outlining concepts new to this edition. More importantly, the learning architecture of this course is built on the model of agile project management. Flexible and collegial, it allows participants to explore the applicability of the PMBOK® Guide to their current projects based on considerations of business value. Sessions are typically two (2) hours long with a short break. That said, course length and locations as well as session days and detailed times can all be arranged at client convenience.
Individuals within a business, NGO, or government organization wishing to pass the PMP® Examination
Participants should be able to sit for the examination upon successful completion of the course. This means that class prerequisites are the same as for the PMP® Examination.

After the overview in Sessions 1 -2, this course addresses all 10 Knowledge Areas of the PMBOK® Guide. These are tackled in pairs of related Areas, in a sequence of pairs informed by roughly when the Areas become pertinent to project planning.

All Cogent Language courses are built according to a consistent design pattern: they have a learning path that is "cogent" to the needs of participants. We have found that, for our participants, a learning path is cogent when it is constructive, collaborative, cumulative, fast-paced, visual, and personal.
Here's what makes this course cogent.
Participants each create an individual mapping of authentic team issues to the PMBOK® Guide framework of Knowledge Areas. As the course takes up each Knowledge Area, participants identify applications of its knowledge potentially useful to one or more of these issues. They then each tailor an application of PMBOK® Guide knowledge to the team issue they prioritize. This tailoring work helps deepen and retain the knowledge essential to passing the examination. Moreover, the work product itself, the tailored application (TAP), may have real business value for participants' teams and organizations.
The course incorporates a range of dynamic, cooperative tasks and protocols, including an "SME Panel", a "Process Elaboration" and "Consulting" walkthroughs of work products, including tailored applications. To facilitate this work, the facilitator utilizes PMBOK® Guide techniques and points out PMBOK® Guide Leadership skills that team members may find useful.
In this course, the main learning activities are not topics presented by the instructor - they are tasks that participants do. Most tasks build on previous tasks and topics, with participants incorporating the work of classmates and accumulating this knowledge in a concrete product. Each participant's portfolio of tailored applications is the capstone work product.
In order to frame, address, and relate the topics in the ambitious agenda above, the course moves very quickly. Most participants wishing to benefit fully should expect to do significant pre-work (≥ 2 hrs) for each session.
Explanations and work for the course are scaffolded by selected diagrams, tables, and other structural models from the class textbook, the PMBOK® Guide itself. Tasks and protocols make extensive use of sketching and whiteboards. In addition, each class may choose to utilize burn down charts, burn up charts, and other visual systems models popular in agile.
Each participant can identify and focus on team issues and PMBOK® Guide applications that s/he cares about. Each also develops a portfolio of a tailored applications (TAP) that may have real business value for his or her teams and organizations. Finally, each develops a personalized plan to pass the PMP® Examination by a date s/he specifies. Class size is typically kept small so that facilitator can provide personalized coaching on each participant's work during the course.
