About the Course
This course introduces the 21st Century practice, in both the foundational “waterfall” and the newer “agile” life cycles. It offers participants the opportunity to learn how to model project contexts, to plan a project based on these models, and to manage implementation based on these plans.
The main learning activity is hands-on: it is seeing how the modern practice might be useful in tackling a project of yours in some organization that you know. You will also learn to use three leading edge project management software platforms, for conceptual modeling, for scheduling, and for tracking your project. Other learning activities are reading, walk-throughs of your work, mini-case studies, coaching, and team tasks.

All Cogent Language courses are built according to a consistent design pattern: they have a learning path that is "cogent" to the needs of participants. We have found that, for our participants, a learning path is cogent when it is constructive, collaborative, cumulative, fast-paced, visual, and personal. Here's what makes this course cogent.
After selecting a past, present, or future project of importance to their organizations, participants role play the project manager planning it. Each constructs the core of a waterfall project management plan, including scope, schedule, and cost-performance baselines.
Groups of class participants are formed based on similarities among projects that individuals have selected. Each group then plays the role of development team in an agile project, with all the individual assignments of team members corresponding to the product backlog of an agile release plan. The team goal/release plan is for all members to complete all individual assignments on the project each has selected by the end of class. In each session, participants walk-thru their current work products with their team. They thus have a structured opportunity to get feedback and help on authentic work challenges from team members and the facilitator, and to offer coaching and advice on members' work products and practice.
In this course, the main learning activities are not topics presented by the instructor - they are task-like assignments that participants do pertinent to projects of interest to them. These assignments correspond to project management processes such as modeling stakeholders and risk, and creating a project management plan. Each assigment builds on previous ones, with participants incorporating the work and advice of teammates into their own products. The technologies facilitating this cumulative work are the cloud-based project management platforms introduced in the class.
In order to frame, address, and relate the topics in the ambitious agenda above, the course moves quickly. For follow up by individuals and/or teams, the course workbook provides references to quality sources of advice on project management, including the global standard PMBOK® Guide.
Explanations and task work for the course are scaffolded by diagrams, tables, and other structural models in the course workbook and in the presentation of the instructor. The learning process of the class makes extensive use of sketching, whiteboards, and cloud-based project management platforms.
Group size is kept small so individuals can benefit from coaching by the instructor and co-workers in the development teams. By way of coaching and interaction, each participant has streams of helpful input focused on the specific project that she has chosen. The main work product of the class is personal. It is a portfolio of project management work products pertinent to that project.
