The Mission of the
charleston fellows program

“The mission of the Charleston Fellows Program is to recruit highly engaged students and then provide them with dynamic experiences, a robust network, and growth opportunities, such that they’re equipped to address critical issues and prepared to become socially responsible and transformative leaders in their chosen field and/or community.”

Committee Notes:

There exists an original mission statement from when the Aiken Fellows Society was founded a decade ago: The mission of the Aiken Fellows program is to identify highly capable students who have the potential to successfully pursue national and international opportunities reserved for top scholars.

Our committee deemed this mission to be outdated, too narrow in its focus. It was no longer a guiding force for organizational decision-making, to the point where few people knew it existed. An update became necessary. After substantive brainstorming, our committee expanded the mission to encompass all three facets of the Charleston Fellows experience: Recruiting promising students, nurturing their skills and abilities, and preparing them for post-graduate life.

  • This mission statement is based on research of best practices for organizational mission statements and existing missions from other merit scholarship programs

  • It is the committee's hope that this mission statement will allow us to more broadly define the concept of success within the program

  • The mission should be widely disseminated to stakeholders to better explain to the campus community what the purpose of the Charleston Fellows is

  • It is the responsibility of the committee and future Fellows leadership to ensure that the Charleston Fellows experience remains integrally tethered to this mission
