Pupil Premium and Sports Funding

Pupil Premium Funding

The Pupil Premium grant is allocated to children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for Free School Meals (known as FSM), including those already receiving free meals for infants. Children who have been looked after by the local authority continuously for more than six months are also included, as are armed forces families and any pupil eligible for FSM at any point in the last six years (known as Ever 6 FSM).

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium in any way that we think will benefit these children. We are held accountable for how we use this additional and valuable funding and we are required to publish information online about how we have used the Pupil Premium and the impact on the children. This ensures that parents and other stakeholders are made fully aware of the attainment of pupils covered by the Pupil Premium and the extra support they have received.

Cobham Free School considers carefully how its funding allocation is spent to ensure that those pupils eligible for the premium are supported the most effectively in their education.

For instance, the additional funding contributes towards:

  • the provision of free school meals
  • a discount to the cost of the uniform
  • access to free supervised study after school with Chromebooks for homework
  • access to free instrumental tuition and other specialist teaching
  • funding additional specialist support from outside agencies, e.g. counselling and behaviour management training

There is a whole school strategy in place to ensure consistency in approach for pupil premium children across the phases. Further information can be found in the Pupil Premium Strategy in Policies & Documents.

In addition to the above, Cobham Free School gives priority to Pupil Premium applicants living in the local area under its over-subscription criteria for admissions to the school. More information is available in the Admissions Policy in Policies & Documents.

PE and Sports Funding

Primary schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6. This funding is awarded to help promote and enable sports in the curriculum and encourage pupils to lead healthier lifestyles. Details of funding and expenditure can be found in Policies & Documents.

Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Catch-Up Premium

The Literacy and Numeracy catch-up premium provides schools with an additional £500 for each Year 7 pupil who did not achieve at least level 4 in reading and/or mathematics at the end of key stage 2. This additional funding is used to provide literacy and numeracy catch-up support for year 7 pupils.

In 2015/16 Cobham Free School received £3,000 Year 7 catch-up funding which was used to provide additional support and interventions to ensure students who were not at the expected standard made more rapid progress.

Interventions included:

  • Read Write Inc Phonic based intervention
  • Passport Maths
  • Mentoring
  • Supervised Study
  • Access to Elsa
  • Homework drop in
