I love when STEM can be connected to Reading! We started our September small group sessions in grades 3 and 4 with Storybook STEM. First, we read the book together, and discussed major themes and plot points. I introduced the STEM challenge and reviewed the science vocabulary and concepts behind the challenge.
Students love the open-ended tasks, and I love the watching them employ the creative design process. Win, win!
Can you create 2D shapes and 3D solids using only fruit snacks and toothpicks?
Can you design a working paper playground that uses simple machines?
Can you create a new and improved crayon box that will hold at least 24 crayons?
