SELECTION PROCESS FOR SCHOOL EXECUTIVES
Gone are the days when principals and assistant principals acted as pure administrators. School leaders are now more properly defined as chief executives, with all the responsibilities and accountability. Nowhere is the leadership role more significant than in a large urban school district. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has already made great strides in strengthening its school leadership. SCREENING PROCESS
In preparation for anticipated vacancies, CMS maintains a pool of potential candidates who have demonstrated their qualifications for principal and/or assistant principal roles through a rigorous talent pool selection process. When a new principal or assistant principal vacancy is confirmed, candidates in the Principal and Assistant Principal Talent Pools will be invited to apply. In addition, current CMS principals and assistant principals are automatically considered candidates of their respective talent pool and are eligible for open positions.
Our commitment is to have a transparent selection process and respect the profession of a CMS school executive. Therefore, we have designed our process to provide applicants with the opportunity to demonstrate their qualifications as they relate to what is required on the job. Candidates are permitted to apply once each academic year.
We ask that candidates maintain an updated resume and current email address in our online employment application system. All communication for administrative vacancies within CMS are sent through our online application system to the members of our Assistant Principal and Principal Talent Pools. Principal vacancies can also be found on our CMS Job Board here.
We offer a fast track application process for the principal talent pool. Candidates are eligible to apply for the fast track principal talent pool if you meet the following criteria:
You are a current principal of a K-12 school
OR
You have at least 1 year of experience as a principal (full school year)
HOW TO APPLY
Application Window is June 4, 2025 - May 31, 2026
To apply, you will need to update or complete your CMS administrative online application - be sure you have all required documents in electronic format before beginning the process. When you get to the “Jobs” tab of the application, you should select the appropriate talent pool posting from the list. Once you select the posting, you will be prompted to attach each of the documents outlined below. Be sure you have each document saved as a single, separate file as you will be asked for them individually. Candidates are encouraged to submit documentation that reflects their most recent experience and evidence of their potential as CMS school leaders.

TALENT POOL REQUALIFICATION PROCESS
CMS School Executive Talent Pool Requalification Window:
December 2025-January 2026
All members of the CMS Executive Talent Pools must go through a requalification process every 3 years to remain in their respective talent pool. Detailed instructions for candidates who need to requalify are sent via email through our online application system during the fall of each year. Specific information on the requalification process will be sent to you before the CMS School Executive Talent Pool Requalification Window via email. The requalification process requires you to submit the following information in requalification application that is sent to you via email during the requalification window:
Updated Structured Resume
Updated Supervisor References
Updated Letter of Interest
End of Year Summative Evaluation (from the previous school year)
Updated Licensure Verification
Note: Talent Pool Members will follow the specific directions on the requalification application in order to reapply to remain in the CMS Assistant Principal or Principal Talent Pools.
