Welcome to 3rd Grade with Ms. Smyth!
This is going to be an exciting year for everyone! My name is Ashley Smyth and I graduated with a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from West Virginia University in May 2008. This will be my twelfth year teaching at Selwyn. I taught Kindergarten for five years and this will be my seventh year teaching 3rd grade! I am originally from West Virginia and moved to Charlotte about eleven years ago. I really enjoy being in Charlotte, and I love teaching! My goal is to make this transition an easy and enjoyable one for all. If you have any additional questions about me, I will be happy to answer them for you!
The 2019 – 2020 school year will be fun and exciting! 3rd grade is a year of transition ranging from the development of skills to the development of independence. It is a time for students to begin to assume more responsibility for their education and become life-long learners. We are starting a new literacy program this year called EL Education. Its goal is to target each child on their individual level through reading, writing, word work, and collaboration. Our core curriculum for Math is Envisions as well as any supplement material needed to meet the Curriculum Standards. Our Science curriculum will vary from skeletons and muscles to the Earth, moon, and sun. Additionally, we will focus on our local government, geography, and Charlotte History in Social Studies. Each of these subjects will allow your child to explore and learn through various whole-group, small-group and individual activities.
My classroom will be a positive learning environment that will be active, hands-on and engaging, and I want your child to enjoy learning and coming to school. Your child will be involved in exploring, experimenting, singing, analyzing, observing, critical reasoning, activating prior knowledge, and relating material to real life experiences. I am eager to see the progress in academic growth, improved social skills, and greater self-confidence in each of your children. Welcome to 3rd grade!
