More About Art Class at Northeast Middle School

Welcome to Art! We will explore the communicative capacity of the visual arts by developing the skills necessary to “read” art and “speak” through art by way of studio projects, as well as studies in aesthetics, art history, and art criticism. Studio assignments are planned so as to expose students to as many visual forms of art as possible including— painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, design, fine crafts, and printmaking. We will try to study as many art making techniques and media as time and resources allow. Students will also learn about the connections between multiple academic disciplines, real world problems, and their personal potential impact in their various communities (local and global) while practicing creative & critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.

For each grade level (6-8), a semester-long visual arts course is offered. 7th & 8th grade students are able to take a semester-long media arts course in the Spring provided they have completed at least one semester of visual arts first. Media arts explores creating and interpreting digital media. Students develop a foundational understanding of photography/photo editing, digital illustration, animation, and film.

Most content, assignments, and resources for class are available on students' art/media arts course in Canvas.
