Mrs. Sharlene Horton

Welcome to 4th Grade!!!

HELLO!

I am Mrs. Horton, and I am so excited to be your teacher this year! This is my third year at Governor's Village STEM Academy, but I am a veteran teacher of 30 years; this will be my 31st year! Before becoming a member of the GVSA Upper School family and now of the Lower School family, I taught at Cochrane Collegiate Academy for 2 years, and before then I taught at Northeast Middle School for 13 years. Before Northeast, I also taught in middle and high schools in Wendell, Rocky Mount, and Durham, all cities in NC, as well as in Macon, GA, Silver Spring, MD, and Indianapolis, IN.

I am a native of North Carolina, graduated from North Carolina Central University in 1992, married my college sweetheart and have been happily married for over 27 years with an only child, who is about to turn 21!

I am excited to work with you this year and learn all about you. I believe very strongly in the power of relationships, classroom community, and high expectations. I look forward to a fun and successful year of learning and growing with you and your parents!

Favorite Teacher Quote:

As a teacher, I try to always remember the power I hold and this message from one of my favorite quotes from Dr.Haim Ginott:

“I've come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It's my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child's life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized.”
