Choral Music Curriculum:
The choirs at South Meck strive to improve musicianship of the group and the individual through study of music literacy, musical performance, and becoming and ensemble. Differing levels are described below
BEGINNING / INTERMEDIATE LEVEL ENSEMBLES
The Men’s Ensemble and The Women’s Ensemble are non auditioned choruses of beginning and intermediate singers. The students learn music literacy using an aural/oral/kinesthetic based strategies including Solfege, Takadimi, and Kodaly/Dalcroze methodologies. Primarily for developing musicians, these courses are populated primarily by freshman and sophomores, but can include the occasional junior or senior. Upper level students (Juniors and Seniors) are encouraged to participate in one of the Proficient or Advanced ensembles.
HONORS CREDIT ENSEMBLES - Classes that receive honors credit demand a higher commitment from the student in regards to classwork, effort, assessment, and performances. Attendance is mandatory for all concerts, midterm examinations, and final examinations.
PROFICIENT LEVEL
The Concert Choir -The concert choir is a Mixed (gender) ensemble of primarily juniors and seniors. Sophomores may enroll upon successful completion of a beginning/intermediate ensemble at South Meck, completion of a similar ensemble from a transfer school, or by audition with Mr. Wynkoop. Music literacy is a focus of the course through study and performance of choral repertoire.
ADVANCED LEVEL
Mixed Chamber Ensemble - Mixed Chamber Ensemble is an auditioned ensemble of 30-40 singers that perform a large quantity of repertoire for a rigorous performance schedule. Membership in this choir demands the highest commitment and desire for excellence.
