6th Grade | 6th graders did a great job with their first drawing and created beautiful sketchbooks covers. students used the Elements and Principles of Art and complex patterns to make their lettering POP. We’re gearing up for Toilet Paper sculptures of favorite foods. Stay tuned for their amazing hamburgers, pizzas, and more.
7th Grade | Now that students have their Digital Galleries set up, they’re ready to add their first drawing into one of the frames. Students used the Element of VALUE to create 3-D Bubble Letters and wow did they do a great job. We’re off to a great start with realistic portraits after closely studying eyes, noses, and mouths. I can’t wait to see these completed portraits.
8th Grade | Last, but not least, our fabulous 8th graders who took the Graffiti Lettering project to a whole new level. I am so proud of the hard work they put into these drawings. They too have started adding their first drawings to their galleries. Students are currently finishing Adobe Spark Collages and will soon start Cardboard Sculptures.
Orchestra: The 7th and 8th grade orchestras are currently working on a spring solo project, much like they did in the fall. These solos are a touch more difficult to push the students into new skills, ideas, and further their musical education. The 6th grade orchestras are continuing perfecting the position, bow holds, and moving into newer rhythms and hopefully their next strings! At the same time the orchestra classes have been delving into history and the “why” of music and have been questioned on what the definition of “music” really is.
The guitar classes are all working dutifully on furthering their skills. The intermediate classes are currently working on Barre Chords so that they can play newer and more interesting music. The Beginner class is working on their next chord progressions and learning strum patterns! These skills will help them grow into a life long passion for guitar and let them be able to play whatever music they choose.
The Orchestra and Guitar classes are also excited to get to work on our One State/One Score project! Each student will be working on preparing their own part of “Ode to Joy,” from Beethoven’s 9th symphony. The parts are leveled so that every student can achieve a high standard of musicality and be included in the performance for Crestdale. These videos will be compiled, along with the Band and Choir, into a large group performance of “Ode to Joy.” We are excited to see what the final project will look like!
Crestdale Chorus: All members of the Crestdale chorus are currently working on studying Ludwig Van Beethoven. Symphony #9 was the last symphony that Beethoven composed, also known as “Ode to Joy.” Our chorus members are learning this piece as soloists, through our Kodaly solfege system. As our final exam for 3rd quarter, all of our choir members will complete a video of themselves singing “Ode to Joy.” Students will have a voluntary opportunity to submit their video to the One State One Score project inspired by the North Carolina Symphony! We are so excited to be a part of this initiative and we look forward to seeing our talented students’ submissions representing Crestdale!
6th Grade | Students are wrapping up their Jazz unit by learning about different Jazz legends who changed the dance world. They have been working on analyzing the dance movements and comparing them among artists/choreographers. After completing Jazz, the dancers will move on to ballet and begin learning about the history behind the technique.
7th Grade | Students have been finishing their Jazz unit and studying Jazz legends. They will be moving into their unit on Modern and contemporary dance next, focusing on the technique and history of the movement.
8th Grade | Students are working on completing their Broadway Jazz projects after learning about influential choreographers on Broadway. They will be choreographing a short dance for a scene in a musical of their choice.
Welcome to our Virtual Drama performing arts class. I am excited about starting a new semester and teaching theater skills to our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.
6th Grade | There is a lot of energy in our classes and it’s a fun way to end the school day with our 6th graders. I will introduce the history of theater and move to performance. Students are enthusiastic about learning how to act, how to use new digital recording techniques and are excited about participating in class. Once the kids learn how to record they will develop pantomime acting skills using movement with their body (without using voice) to show stories or ideas. They are encouraged to include family members and pets in their scenes.
7th Grade | Students will develop physical acting skills by using non-verbal communication. They will use facial expressions, body language and movement to communicate thoughts, ideas and stories. They are learning how to record and upload videos into Canvas, Flipgrid, Google and other recording platforms. Students will use their Chromebooks, laptops, desktops, cell phones, tablets and any other recording device to submit assignments. Students will record physical acting performance scenes, share them with classmates and develop supportive peer feedback skills. Drama students will learn theater vocabulary, how to read and write scenes and will add voice to their second quarter performances. I encourage families to support their drama student by participating in scene work. It has been a pleasure watching whole families perform.
8th Grade | It’s all about connections for 8th grade. Students want to talk to and see their friends. I try to cultivate an online environment where kids can develop performance skills while they work on friendship skills. Students may work with a partner on their pantomime unit. They are encouraged to add the elements of technical theater such as props, costumes, and scenery. We will also begin reading and analyzing short play scripts to reinforce ELA skills.
Congratulations to our Fine Arts Students of the Month for December!

She is dedicated, committed and more than willing to help others find their potential in theater as well. Montana is a strong leader and great role model.

VOCAL PERFORMANCE - When I think about my childhood, there are certain African American musicians who’s music automatically bring back positive nostalgic memories. I bet if you were to look at a list of 12 musicians you would recognize them! A few of these singers are still alive and still performing. Check out this list of “12 African American Musicians Who Changed Music Forever” and enjoy!
FINE ART- Kehinde Wiley is an amazing portrait artist who challenges the way we perceive portraiture and the power that comes with them. Wiley chooses his models through a process called Street Casting. This is an important step in his process which provides people in communities to “reinvent” historical portraits. Kehinde Wiley’s ability to show people realistically is outstanding but his ability to create power, confidence and presence is extraordinary. Check out the following videos to learn more about the artist. Kehinde Wiley Speaking About His Work
Wiley’s New Republic Exhibition
DANCE- Jacob’s Pillow Dance Interactive has created a page full of famous dances from notable black choreographers. Scroll through and watch and read about choreographers such as Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison, Asada Dafora, Bill T Jones, Pearl Primus, and many more.
THEATER - ‘Shuffle Along’ was a Broadway musical sensation in 1921. It was written by four African American composers. Our 7th grade students read about this musical last fall. To learn more about the remix musical that brought new sounds and moves, check out the PBS News Hour video from YouTube.
The lottery has closed for the 2021-2022 school year. Please plan to hear from a member of the Crestdale Team in the next coming weeks for registration if your child was granted a seat in our program.
We can't wait to meet you!
