ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION
Instructional Practices:
AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID's proven learning support structure incorporates teaching and learning methodologies in the critical areas of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR). WICOR provides a learning model that educators can use to guide students in comprehending concepts and articulating ideas at increasingly complex levels (scaffolding) within developmental, general education, and discipline-based curricula.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. AVID Trains 80,000 educators annually to close the opportunity gap, so they can prepare all students for college, careers, and life.
AVID—Advancement Via Individual Determination—fosters a safe and open culture, high expectations for teachers and students, and collaboration in all classrooms.
By teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age, AVID Elementary teachers create a ripple effect in later grades.
AVID Secondary equips teachers and schools with what they need to help these students succeed on a path to college and career success.
AVID for Higher Education (AHE) works with two-year and four-year colleges and universities to implement a holistic approach to accelerating student success.
