Sight word games:

It is very important that your child is learning their Kindergarten sight words! Many have already accomplished this task! If that's the case, move on to the 1st grade words provided on your child's homework folder. Here are some fun games to do at home to make learning sight words more fun!!

SIGHT WORD PRACTICE (You will need two sets)

SCAVENGER HUNT:

To play the Scavenger Hunt game, create a list of the sight words you have hidden. Hide the sight word flash cards. Ask child to find the hidden sight words. As they find them, they read them and check them off the list.

Smash the Sight Word:

Put the flash cards on a table. Use a fly swatter, a dinosaur, a star wars figure, etc. Ask the child to smash, stomp, etc on the sight word.

Memory Game:

Place two sets of sight words (I usually start off with 3 matches (6 cards) and progressively increase the number of matches. Mix the matches with some the child is already familiar with and some that are new. Have the child read each card as they flip them over.

Go Fish:

Make a deck of 20 flash cards (10 sets). Pass out 4-6 cards to each player. The remainder goes in a messy pile in the middle. First player will ask, “Do you have (sight word)?” Second Player will say Yes or No. If the second player has the sight word, they must give it to player one. If the second player does not have the sight, player one must draw from the pile in the middle. Continue until one player matches all their cards.

Sight Word Bingo:

Make simple BINGO cards using 9 (3x3) squares. Tape the BINGO cards into the squares. Use the second set to pull from. Have the child match the card to the card on the BINGO card. Child should reread as they match the card. Child can yell, ”BINGO” when they get three in a row.

Shaving Cream:

Show the child the sight word. Place simple shaving cream on the table or cookie sheet. Have the child write the word in shaving cream, say the word, erase it and repeat 2-3 times.

Magnets:

Place alphabet magnets on the table. Provide child with cookie sheet. Show the word, child reads the word, then builds the word with the magnet letters on the cookie sheet.

Second Option, if you have one of those fishing poles with a magnet at the end, the child can fish for the letters and build that way as well.

Paper Plate Toss:

Write sight words on paper plates. Use like Frisbees to throw after reading the word.

Concentration:

Use your second set of word to place on the table. Give matched to child. Use a timer to see if they can match the word and read the word before the times goes off.

Word Hunt:

Look for target words in books or in the newspaper. If using the newspaper your child can highlight or circle the word ring

We are also mastering digraphs, dipthongs, and blends. These are just fancy words for how a combination of letters sound together. For example, "ch" makes one sound /ch/ like in chick. Here are some sites to visit to help your child with these.
