Ms. McAleer 2B - Homework

Homework will begin the first week in October. This allows us time to get to know one another, practice books, good reading habits, and independent reading skills. In math, it allows us some time to get into the curriculum and familiar with the numbers 1-100.

The plastic bag your child has with their name on the front in green will be used to hold their reading books for homework, which we will begin on the first of October. This bag of books will go home on Monday and must come back every Monday to have their books refreshed for a new week. On the first week of October they will take their homework book home as well as their plastic bag of books for the week. The bag of books will stay home for the week and be returned on Monday. The homework bag and homework scribbler needs to travel back and forth between home and school daily. PLEASE place it back in your child’s kitbag after use every evening. Completed work will travel home in this bag, as well as any hard copy information sheets that need to be sent home. Check it daily.

Reading Homework

Each Monday, your child will bring home five books for the week. Some of these books will be familiar and others may be new. There also may be times that the same book appears home after a couple of weeks. This allows for books to be read again to aid in comprehension and fluency.
Reading homework shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes. Reading every evening. Extra ‘tickets’ for weekend reading:)! Please initial. Record how your child found the text. (E-Easy, R-just Right, H-Hard) We encourage you to develop a nightly reading routine that works for your family. Here are some suggestions:
- If your child is really too tired or not feeling well enough, read to him/her or share the book! You read a page, they read a page.
- Read to your child each day - when reading to your child each night, ask your child to find specific words on the page, look for words that have a specific sound, and take time to discuss what’s happening in the story (problem/solution/characters)
There will be a reading log provided in your child's homework bag. Please make sure you sign the log each night with the books that your child reads (even if it is a book from home, please add it to the log).
Please ensure that the books are returned to school Every Monday so they can be changed for the new week.

Spellings

Each week 5 new words will be assigned. There is a scribbler inside your child's homework duo-tang that they can practice their spellings in. Here are some fun ways to practice spelling!

Write the words 3 times each. Now try doing it with your other hand!
Write the words with silly letters.
Rainbow write the words 2 times each.
Write the words with blue vowels and red consonants.
Write the words with ALL capital letters.
Write the words with a color pattern (pink, blue, green)
Make the words with sticks, playdough, rocks....
'Sky write' the words by using your finger tomake the word in the air.
Stand on your doorstep and yell out the spellings:)

I will ask that your child use one of the weekly spellings in a sentence once each week. Make sure their sentence begins with an uppercase, has spacing between the words, punctuation at the end, and that it makes sense. The sentences should be at least 5-7 words at minimum. This can be done in the space provided in their homework scribbler.

Math Homework

I do not assign math homework on a regular basis. I will keep you posted as to what skills we are working on so that you may practice these at home.
