Addition Strategies
Addition Strategies
Counting on (+1, +2, +3)
Parts of 10 (6+4, 8+2..) Any two numbers that add up to ten.
Doubles (up to 12)
Doubles plus 1 (Neighbors) - 6+7, these two digits are neighbors on the number line, seven is just one more than 6 so double the smallest number (6) and add one more )
Doubles plus 2 (Almost Neighbors) - 6+8, these two digits are ALMOST neighbors. There is just one number between them....so double the number that is missing in the middle.
Empty House - When adding a single digit to 10, just move it into the empty one's house! 10+3=13. 3 moved into the ones house because it was empty.
Make it 10 - When adding 9 to a number, just pretend the 9 is actually 10, then take one away. 13+9, think 13+10=23 so 13+9 is one less (22)
OR
When adding 9 to a number, take one from the other number and give it to the 9 so that it is now 10. 13+9, think 12+10.
Make it 10 - When adding 8 to a number, just pretend the 8 is actually 10, then take two away. 13+8, think 13+10=23 so 13+8 is two less (21)
OR
When adding 8 to a number, take two from the other number and give it to the 8. 13+8, think 11+10.
