Home Reading!
The first school day of each week, your child will take home 4 independent reading books and 1 shared reading book.
Ideally, your child would read one book each day. Choose a set time and routine that works best for your family.
Feel free to send the books back and forth to school each day in their homework bag, or keep them home for the week.
On Friday (or the last day of school for the week) I will collect all the homework books so they can be redistributed to other students.
Please ensure your child’s homework books are returned on the last day of school for the week!
Your child has spent time practicing their independent reading books at school. When they come home, they should be easy!
Encourage your child to re-read familiar books. This builds confidence, fluency, and expression!
Ask your child questions about the book to ensure they understand what they’re reading!
Extra Reading Practice - Kids A-Z
To support our students with home reading, the school purchased an account for our class on the Kids A-Z website. This website is a large library of books organized by level. This will be a shared account for the students in our classroom. You can access this book library on a computer or by downloading the app “Kids A-Z”

This is a great way to access books when you’re ‘on the go’. There are a variety of fiction, non-fiction and high interest books. There are comprehension questions at the end of each book as well!
Here are some ways to engage in your child’s shared reading book:
See-saw Reading
Take turns reading one page at a time
Choral Reading
Read together at the same time
Independent Reading
Your child reads to themselves or a teddy
Partnership Reading
Sit together and explore the book, take turns reading and discuss the book as you read together
Read the Pictures
If you child is unable to read the words, they can look at the pictures and make up their own story
Word Hunt
Look on each page for words your child can read. Ask your child to find a word they know and see how fast they can find it
Take turns
You read a book, your child reads a book
Popcorn Reading
