Week of Oct. 27-31
It's Halloween week!
Fundations: Unit 3 - closed syllable exceptions - ild (as in wild), ind (find), old (cold), olt (colt), ost (post). These are exceptions, because closed syllables are have a vowel closed in by a consonant, but it is a short vowel. In these exceptions, the vowel is long. Our trick words for this week: who, goes, where, pretty, done.
Math - We will continue to practice skip counting and previous addition strategies. We will also learn "add 10".
Halloween Info
Dress up: Students are welcome to wear costumes on the day of Halloween. We do ask that costumes are age appropriate with no masks or weapons. Please have a costume that the students can put on quite independently, and if make up or similar is needed, that this is completed at home. In previous year, many families have opted to have their children wear an alternate costume, or a costume from a previous year, instead of the one they will wear trick or treating on Halloween night. This helps to avoid any disappointment should their costume accidentally get ripped, spilled on or forgotten at school on Friday.
Treats: Students are welcome to bring in treats for the class on Friday, though there is certainly no expectation to do so. A friendly reminder that any treats brought in must be peanut and nut free.
We will have some fun Halloween activities at school on Friday!
Have a great week!
Week: Oct. 20 - 25
Fundations - We will continue on with Unit 2 - bonus letters and glued sounds. The "glued" or welded sounds: am, an, ang, ing, ong, ung, ank, ink, onk, and unk. Bonus letters: After a short vowel, the letters f, l and s get a bonus, or extra letter (ff, ll, ss), as in stuff, fill, class.
Our trick words for this week are: shall, full, pull, both, walk, talk. Many units run for multiple weeks; on those weeks the trick word practice will remain the same. I will always share the trick words we are working on each week.
Writing - We continue to work on our small moments writing and different ways to add even more detail to our pieces with a focus on telling about our our feelings and how our body felt while the event was happening. We will also work on bold beginnings to catch our readers attention.
Math - We will continue to work on practicing 100s chart skills and skip counting skills (by 5s and 2s). We will review "counting on" doubles and begin the Make 10 addition strategy. (Two numbers that go together to make 10. 1+9=10, 2+8=10, 3+7=10, etc.)
**Just a note about the Xtramath website that we use in class for math fact practice: If students would like to use it at home as well, families are welcome to link to their child's school account using the individual special code provided on the Xtramath information sheet provided in their homework logs. If it is used at home, please ensure the child is answering the math questions on their own with no help as the program keeps track of their answers and adapts future questions to those the student needs more practice with. If the child has help to answer the questions correctly, the program will think the child has mastered that question and move on. It is also helpful for me to see the questions students need more practice with and the kinds of answers they give.
Notes:
Picture retakes are on Thursday of this week. Please send me an email if you would like your child's photo to be taken on Thursday.
Have a great week!

Picture Day - Tomorrow - Tuesday, Oct. 7 - All English Classes
Book Fair - Our book fair is happening this week! Our class will visit the bookfair on Thursday morning. Family Night will be Thursday from 6:15-7:15 if families would like to attend then. If you plan to send money for your child to make a purchase at the book fair, please only send it on Thursday. Also, we are asking that any money sent in be put in a baggie with the child's name and the amount of money enclosed written on the bag. Bags and money can easily be set down, and having bags labelled will make it easier to keep track and find the owners if this happens. Please also have a conversation with your child if there are expectations around the types of books/items they are to buy. Flyers that shows a selection of the books available at the fair were sent home last week.
PD Day Friday - There will be no classes for students on Friday as it is a professional development day for teachers.
Have a great week!
Week of Sept. 29
We have been exploring books with kindness and friendship themes. One favourite from last week was "The World Needs More Purple People". Our class are avid and eager readers. They are very engaged in the books and share thoughtful ideas and connections. Our students are a very kindhearted group, which is so wonderful to see!
Fundations - We will work to finish up unit 1 in Fundations. The trick words this week are: your, was, they, said, one. Today was a very busy Monday with bus evacuation practices and other extras, so we did not get these written in our homework logs today. However, they can be writtten in at home and practiced throughout the week. Please continue to write comments about your child's reading of their homework books each night.
Math - We will continue to work on practicing 100s chart skills and counting skills. Our first addition strategy is the" counting on" strategy.

Cotton Park Field Trip on Wednesday: Just a reminder for students to dress for the weather and bring a snack that is easy to each outside. Classes will return to the school before lunch.
Thank you for your support of GSP's Terry Fox Run. The school raised $1000!
Lunch Utensils - Please pack lunch utensils in lunchboxes as the school lunch programs do not provide spoons or forks with their meals.
Have a wonderful week!
