Home Learning : Your child will be coming home with their Xtra Math log in information this week. This is an online, free website (there is an APP, but it is not free) that allows students to practice their addition and subtraction mental math strategies that we have been learning and developing in class. The program is designed for daily practice, and only has students log on for a short time to practice, so that it is not exhaustive. I am able to monitor their progress with this program online. This is an excellent resource for at home practice and to support a key component of our Grade 2 curriculum. Students will progress through the program and demonstrate mastery of addition and subtraction facts and receive corresponding certificates. When they have mastered both, they will graduate from the Xtra Math Program! If you have any questions about this program, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Reminders:
Good Fit Books: A reminder to help students reflect on whether their homework books are a good fit using the I PICK strategy to review how we can pick good fit books:
I: I can choose my own books.
Purpose: Why am I am reading? (for entertainment, to learn information about something)
Interest: Am I interested in what this book is about?
Comprehension: Can I understand this book?
Know: Do I know most of the words? We talked about how there should be about 3 tricky words on a page for it to be a good fit. This ensures we are challenging ourselves just enough to grow as readers.
Picking good fit books is a skill that needs to be practiced and developed. You can help your child with this by helping them to reflect and identify if the new books they are bringing home next week are a good fit. If they are not, we talked about how they can trade them out the next day as they develop the skill of picking good fit books. Thank you in advance for your help and support with this!
Attendance: If your child is going to be late or absent, please send me an email or call the school first thing in the morning to let me know.
Fundations Website Page: We will be revisiting content from Unit 4 and students will be reassessed at the end of the week. Check out our Unit 4 page to see what we are learning in class about suffixes.

Reminders:
Good Fit Books: On Friday, we talked about having the responsibility to pick our own good fit books. It is so important for students to cultivate a love of reading and choosing the books they read is so critical to that. There was a whole section of our classroom library that we didn't get a chance to explore until Friday. Students will now be given the opportunity to choose their own books from our wide selection of books in the classroom. With this comes the responsibility to pick books that are a good fit. We used the I PICK strategy to review how we can pick good fit books:
I: I can choose my own books.
Purpose: Why am I am reading? (for entertainment, to learn information about something)
Interest: Am I interested in what this book is about?
Comprehension: Can I understand this book?
Know: Do I know most of the words? We talked about how there should be about 3 tricky words on a page for it to be a good fit. This ensures we are challenging ourselves just enough to grow as readers.

We had a great start in 2A!
It was so wonderful meeting all the new 2A students last week and getting excited about our year in Grade 2 together! As we head into our first full week of school, our focus will be to continue getting to know each other and building our classroom routines.

Favorite Books: This month, we will be launching the reader's workshop with a focus on getting to know students as readers, building a community of readers and familiarizing students with routines that can support their reading at home and school. As part of getting students exciting about reading, they will share about their favourite book. It would be wonderful if they have a favourite book at home to bring it into school on Tuesday to share. If students do not have a copy of their favourite book at home, that's okay as well!

Welcome to 2A!
I am thrilled to be at Glen Stewart this year and am so grateful for the opportunity to be working with your children. It is my goal to ensure that your children feel safe and welcomed in my classroom. Throughout the year we will work to build on all their skills so that they are all able to reach their full potential in all that they do. Please feel free to contact me at anytime throughout the school year, as it is my goal to ensure the success of your children.
A few notes as we get ready for our new school year:
First day of school is this Thursday, September 5th. Your child should be at school by 8:30AM.
Please ensure your child comes to school with:
A healthy snack (You may want to pack a few extra for the first few days as sometimes students are a bit hungrier coming off a different summer snack schedule!)
Water bottle
Indoor shoes to keep in school
Lunch (There will be no hot lunch or provincial lunch during the first 2 days of school. These will begin next week. There are two options for ordering lunches: The Glen Stewart Hot Lunch Program and the PEI School Food Program. (Please see the parent portal tab above for links to both of these!)
Headphones: Please send your child to school with a pair of headphones labelled with their name. These will be kept in school and used to support learning through the use of technology.
Items that will be sent home to be returned:
Mailbag and Communication Folder: Each day, students will bring their mailbag to and from school. Inside the mailbag is a Communication Folder. One side is labelled "Left at Home" for items that can be removed and stay at home. The other side is labelled "Right Back to School" which will include students' weekly reading log/homework or forms to be signed and returned. Homework will not be assigned for the first couple of weeks as I get to know students as readers and learners.
All About Me Bag: On Thursday, your child will have a paper bag sent home in their Communication Folder. Students will think about 5 items to put in their bag that they will share with the class next week to help us get to know them better. The day your child will be sharing will be written on their paper bag.
Extra Clothes Bag: On Thursday, students will receive a plastic bag with their name on it in their Communication Folder. This is to fill with some extra clothes that will be kept at school in case they are needed. Extra clothes should include socks, underwear, pants and a shirt.
