Horizon High School announced the new head football coach and athletic coordinator Omar Garcia, on Jan. 15 at the main gym. Athletes, cheerleaders, teachers, students and the media were present during the awaited announcement.
Garcia has a wide background as a coach, on different campuses. He mentioned how he has learned from his experiences and plans to utilize his skills as part of the scorpion family.
“I've been doing this for twelve years total in my teaching/coaching career. I started off in a middle school in Corpus Christi Texas, then Hanks High School for about ten years as a head coach of baseball and offensive coordinator. Then at Montwood High School this past year. I think it's a variety of different experiences that I've been able to grow from, and grow from the coaches that were around me,” Garcia said.
Even though the season is over and the team is now starting to practice for next year, Garcia plans to develop a strong bond with his team using consistency, commitment, and authenticity to represent the scorpion pride on the field.
“We have to bring that energy everyday, we have to bring our best everyday and change our best everyday. You’re either getting better or getting worse there is no in between. Build that comradery, it's going through those battles that really help us to come together as a team and hopefully get a change in the culture that we have here,” Garcia said.
Garcia wants to establish the “Rep the Brand” mentality, which is “the toughest, hardest working, most competitive team in Texas” inspired by Texas Tech Football coach Joey McGuire. Rep the brand establishes a tone that will lead to success, in the field and inside the classroom.
“We can't just do that in one arena and have it not transferred to another arena. It's the way we interact with our peers, with our teachers, administrators, everybody on campus. I think the brand is definitely something that can grow just from the football program to other sports to the entire school, toughest, hardest working, most competitive, Horizon Scorpions,” Garcia said.
In the short amount of time the coach has been on campus, scorpions have expressed the excitement of the new energy. They hope that the new addition to the team will conclude in a successful season.
“He brings a lot of positivity and a lot of motivation and he knows how to push people and put them to work. I feel like this is gonna be a great year and great season,” sophomore Nathan Davila said.
The season is approaching and the legacy of the new football coach has arrived on campus. Scorpions are welcoming their new coach and are ready to rep the brand for Horizon High School.
