Clint ISD presents the Rookie of the year award to newcomer teachers that represent the best teaching qualities and go above and beyond for their students. This year the award was given to Ms. Lynnsey Sasser.
Ms. Sasser teaches English II at Horizon. She has been passionate about the subject for a long time, even changing her degree midway to college to pursue a career she loved.
“I think English kinda piqued my interest. So I was like what am I going to do with an English degree and I thought well I have a family full of teachers so let's go to education,” Sasser said.
The English department has had a positive impact with Ms.Sasser. She's able to connect with her students by updating her lesson plan in a trendy way.
“What I appreciate about Ms. Sasser is her enthusiasm for her students. She's a young teacher so she's very innovative,” Ms. Contreras said.
Sophomore Daniel Gutierrez describes Ms. Sasser as an inspiring teacher. Sasser encourages her students and helps them think through the work instead of leaving them to do it by themselves.
“Ms. Sasser has helped me in English by just being there and being able to go to her when I don't understand something and helping me have a better understanding,” Gutierrez said.
Students believe some qualities that make a good teacher are someone who makes sure you don’t fall behind, and someone who makes you feel comfortable to ask them any questions.
“She actually listens to her students and actually focuses on the importance of what students believe in and is just an overall good teacher and she's great and it's fun to be in her class,” Gutierrez said.
Teaching is a hard profession but everyone deserves to be recognized. Sasser was shocked when they nominated her as rookie teacher of the year.
"I think being rookie teacher of the year I would like to spread that value of recognition to the rest of the teachers and be like everyone does a good job, you know, it's a lot of work” Sasser said.
For students who want to become a teacher in the future, Ms. Sasser gave some advice to those who have a passion for it.
“When you're in college your learning things about being a teacher but you don't fully understand it until your practicing it, so I think kind of try to prepare yourself for that expect the unexpected but at the end of the day if you have a passion for kids if you have a passion for learning, if you have a passion in a particular subject its gonna go along way,” Sasser said.
