The pressure to go to prom is very high because it is a celebration that marks the ending of the school year. This event is one of the last times the senior class is all together before the big day of graduation.
As prom approached quickly, the promposal season did not disappoint. Senior Jacob Escobar, gathered his friends in the breezeway and lived out a true High School experience. Balloons that spelt out the word “PROM” and a speaker were placed where he danced for his soon-to-be date. The video of the promposal was featured on one of the city's biggest Instagram accounts, therealfitfamelpaso.
At first it was to mess around, get everyone hype and have a good time because the schools are not fun now,” Jacob Escobar said.
Prom Queen and King is seen as a popularity contest to many. Although prom has changed quite a bit over the years. People from many different groups run for the campaign and it is interesting to see what people do to win that crown. Jacqueline Chavez incorporated interactive posters and treats to give out the week before voting.
“The reason I wanted to run for prom queen was because I wanted to prove to myself that I could take initiative and I always wanted to as a kid. My mom was also prom queen. The most important reason was because my friend Briana supported and pushed me to do it,” Jaqueline Chavez said.
Prom night can cost teenagers a pretty penny. The dinner before and entrance tickets don’t even compare to the amount of money the outfits will cost. Around 75% of girls going to the Horizon High school Prom spent more than $150 dollars on their dress this year.
“My dress was about $140 and I based it off the theme, Great Gatsby,” Andrea Nolasco said.
Many schools don’t get the opportunity to celebrate their prom outside of their campus. Horizon High School has been fortunate enough to experience this celebration at different locations the past few years. This year's prom will be taking place at Tuscany Halls.
“When we saw the price we got a little bit scared because it's already a lot with the ticket price, but we wanted to make sure the seniors had something very nice for their last dance,” Senior Sponsor Mrs. Picazo said.
With great anticipation, Horizon High School finally crowned its 2023 Prom King Jacob Escobar and Prom Queen Jaqueline Chavez at the conclusion of the eventful night. Upperclassmen enjoyed dancing the night away one final time.
