Roles of a School Counselor
School counselors help all students:
apply academic achievement strategies
manage emotions and apply interpersonal skills
plan for postsecondary options (higher education, military, work force)
You are NOT in trouble!
Everything said (unless it has to do with self-harm, harm to others, or abuse) is confidential!
You do not need to have something bad going on. We enjoy good news too!
The counselor...
Will validate your emotions, feelings, and thoughts.
Will actively listen to you. You are IMPORTANT to us!
May offer a reframe (different way of looking at) of your situation.
May challenge wrong assumptions. You are stronger than you think!
Will help you come up with strategies and techniques you can use to be successful.
May ask questions to better understand your concerns.
