Students were given the opportunity to research traditional masks from a world culture of their choice. After finding several examples they designed their own mask in that style. First they made one mask from non-drying modeling clay. Then, using plaster of Paris, they made a mold of the mask. Using the plaster mold, they were challenged to make four copies of their mask; one straight from the mold, one subtractive where they could only carve things away, one additive where they could only add new elements, and one however they wanted. Once fired in the kiln, the students glazed each mask.
