Mickle Middle School Families, as we finally begin to see the colorful foliage change, we are excited for a productive and engaging November! This month is a wonderful time to reflect on all we have to be thankful for, and we encourage our students to carry this spirit of gratitude into their daily interactions and studies. Outside of the classroom, major events this month will include our Fall Festival for students on Friday, November 7 and a PTSO sponsored Craft Fair for the community on Saturday, November 22. Please keep an eye out for details on these events. Most importantly, please mark your calendars for our upcoming Thanksgiving break. School will be closed starting on Wednesday, November 26th, and will resume on Tuesday, December 2nd. We hope this extended break provides a fantastic opportunity for all our families to spend quality time together, recharge, and enjoy the holiday.

If your child is suffering from anxiety, you are not alone. The good news is that in most situations, anxiety is normal and temporary. Anxiety becomes a concern if it persists — it
can affect relationships with family, peers and teachers, contribute to academic challenges, and lead to school avoidance/refusal. Addressing anxiety is important for a child’s overall well-being, not just attendance.
In addition, if your child starts to complain of symptoms like a headache or stomach ache, it is important to quickly determine whether this is related to anxiety or a physical illness that might require missing school. If the challenge is anxiety, staying home may worsen the situation.
What can families do?
Here are some tips that you can use to help your child tackle potential challenges and return to school quickly:
Do not punish your child for refusing to go to school. This can make things worse.
If possible, avoid letting your child stay home. Staying home may provide short-term relief for your child, but can cause your child to feel disconnected from teachers and classmates and fall further behind, creating more stress and anxiety.
Speak with your child to learn what is bothering them and why they are avoiding school.
Make it clear you are there to support your child and that together you can tackle whatever issues are keeping them from school.
Take advantage of school resources. Talk with the school nurse, counselor, social worker, psychologist or teacher to discuss challenges and identify what will help your child return to school.
If symptoms persist or are very severe, your child’s anxiety may be due to an underlying
behavioral health disorder (i.e., anxiety disorder, panic disorder), an undiagnosed learning
disability or the result of a physical or chronic health condition and should be evaluated by your child’s medical provider.
Every Day Counts when it comes to your child being successful in school!
We value your partnership and know you also want your child to succeed. Let’s work together to ensure your student regularly attends school!
Check out this brochure for more information about how to address anxiety in children.

Food Resources For Families
In response to the high need of students and their families experiencing hunger, the Food Bank, in cooperation with Leadership Lincoln and Lincoln Public Schools, opened the LPS Emergency Pantry.
Any LPS, private or homeschool student and their family can come to the pantry to receive food assistance. The amount of food families can have is based on family size.
The pantry is located at Bryan Community (300 S. 48th St.) and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3-5:30 p.m. when school is in session.

MyLNK is a website (https://mylnk.app) and a mobile app (for Apple and Android - search MyLNK) that has information about community resources. It can be downloaded in a wi-fi environment and then used when wi-fi is not available. The website provides translations in Spanish, Vietnamese, and Arabic.
On October 29, Nebraska paused SNAP benefits due to the federal government shutdown. This means that SNAP benefits will not be issued during the month of November until the shutdown ends.
What do I need to do?
If you are currently on SNAP, you may continue to use any remaining benefits on your EBT card for nine months from the date of last use.
You must also continue to recertify your SNAP and report any changes to your personal information.
If you are not on SNAP, you can still sign up and your application will still be processed.
If you are interested in helping LPS students and families in need, you can give to The Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools student emergency fund, or contact them at 402-436-1612.
Hey 6th Grade Families!
Over the last few weeks, we've been learning a lot in our classes about how to show respect, how to have self-control, and how to accept consequences when you make a mistake. That's a huge part of being in 6th grade!
Teachers are noticing that many of our students need a little practice following our school's three big rules:
Be Safe
Be Respectful
Be Responsible
We need your help! To make sure everyone can learn their best, please remind your students to:
Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
Use kind words (no put-downs or hurtful language).
Follow your teacher's directions the first time they ask.
When we follow these simple steps, we make learning easier and more fun for everyone, and get to stay right here in class!
Thanks for your help!

LPS believes that effective instruction can and should include the appropriate use of instructional technology to support learning. To that end, a District Instructional Technology Tool (ITT) Committee works to identify ITTs that are safe for student use, support district learning goals, and encourage innovative teaching and learning. All reviewed ITTs are cataloged in the LPS ITT Matrix.
The most frequently used, approved, and supported ITTs are made available to students and staff in the LPS Portal. Students access their LPS Portal by clicking the ‘HOME’ button on their Chromebook.
Need a conversation starter with your student? Ask them for a tour of their LPS Portal and which ITTs they’re currently using in class.
The eduroam wireless network is more secure than most public wifi networks and is available in several locations around Lincoln. Students using their LPS Chromebooks around town should connect to eduroam whenever it is available. Simply select it from the list of available networks - no other steps needed! Visit this eduroam poster and/or LPS jump code: pao4 for more information.
Scenarios where eduroam may come in handy include:
Visiting UNL campuses? Don’t hassle with UNL guest wifi, use eduroam!
Hanging out at The Lighthouse, The Malone Center or The Bay? Use eduroam!
Serving or staying at People’s City Mission? Use eduroam!
Parenting a “Chromebook student” can present some interesting challenges. While few students would choose to do worksheets all evening just for fun, your student might actually WANT to be on their Chromebook at night. It can be hard to tell what they’re focusing on while staring at the device screen. Use this Parent Guide to Student Chromebooks & the Digital Learning Environment in LPS resource to help inform your conversations about expectations for Chromebook use at home.
There is a lot that parents COULD know about the tools their students use in LPS. These are the 10 most important things! 10 Things to Know about Student Technology in LPS
As a reminder, damage caused on purpose, or because of a lack of care for the Chromebook, cannot be covered by the Chromebook Assurance Program (CAP). Families will be billed for any intentional damage.
The Mickle Middle School apparel online store is currently open. Items purchased from this store will be available prior to the end of the first semester, so these could make great holiday gifts.
