WEEK 9

This week is all about Around YOUR World. Here's the rabbit hole you're following this week:

1. Find the nearest thing to you and describe how you are:

a) like it,

b) NOT like it

2. What are you most scared of in life? Find another 2 people from other classes who share the same fear. Record their names.

3. Think of your first pet. Now, find a teacher who also had the same type of first pet.

4. Sometimes, one person's trash is another's treasure. Locate the hidden treasure within Aspire. Once you've found one, leave the rest so everyone gets one! You may need to think like Vikki to locate these ...

5. If you stood under the awning of Aspire, facing South then followed these instructions, what would you find:

• Turn 270 degrees Left

WEEK 8

This week, you are going to Buñol with your favourite parent or guardian and your budget is $7980.

1. What country would you be flying into?
2. What city has the nearest airport?
3. Find the cheapest 2 return flights from Christchurch and deduct it from your budget. How much do you have left?
4. What is Buñol famous for and what are some facts about it?
5. You will be staying for 2 nights in Buñol, convert that to NZD and subtract that from your budget.
6. Explain where this country is on the map, including the oceans/seas that may surround it.
7. Go on a trip where you would have an experience that is uniquely ‘of this country’ - ie: you couldn’t do anywhere else in the world. What is it? What is the cost in NZD? Subtract it from your budget.
8. How much money do you have left?

WEEK 7

This week, you and your ‘Bestie’ are going on a trip to Tallinn! The budget for you both is $6001.

1. Find the cheapest return flight from Christchurch - deduct this cost from your budget (remember, it’s for 2 of you!). How much is left?
2. What country are you flying to?
3. What is the major nationalities there and what is the major language?
4. How many time zones do you fly across on your journey?
5. Because you’re super respectful and you didn’t want to wake your family in the middle of the night, how long would you have to wait before you could call your family know you arrived safe? What time would it be in NZ?
6. Do you need to apply for a Visa in order to enter this country for your holiday?
7. It turns out that you will be timing your trip to coincide with the 2019 Game Development Conference! You and your bud are both keen to attend and purchase 2 Priority Tickets. Convert the cost into NZD. How much is it? Subtract it from your total. How much do you have left?
8. Aside from a Game Developer, list 5 other careers linked to this field. NOTE: check out some of the speakers & see what they do.

This week, you are going to Bulgaria, flying into the capital and taking your best friend.

WEEK 3

This week, you and one of your parents are going to Stewart Island for 3 nights & 4 days. Here’s some activities on your itinerary that you need to book & cost while still coming in under budget ($3000) - which includes both of you. Record all costs and the companies you are using.

• Dive with Great White Sharks
• Lawn bowling
• Return flights from Christchurch
• Accommodation
• Food cost

WEEK 2

Woo hoo, it’s ATW time! This week you are travelling the amazing Sri Lanka but 1st, you need to know some things about it…

1. Where is it? (What would you say if you were explaining to someone where to look for the country)
2. What is the capital?
3. How many people live in the country?
4. What are the major religions there?
5. What is the distance to travel from Christchurch to Colombo, Sri Lanka?
6. If you were a little on the OCD side of life, what other cities within Sri Lanka would you need to travel to, to ensure you travelled EXACTLY 12 000km? Draw your travel route (including distance) on a map.
7. What is the most complex way you can get to Sri Lanka? How much would this cost?

This week you are staying home and saving your money for your next trip! Get you persuasive speech finished, printed and cut up on palm cards ready for your presentation on Wednesday.

WEEK 6

It’s time to get wild - this week you and your BFF are going to Colorado! You will be there for 3 weeks, how much adventure can you pack into it? Your budget is $15 813 for you both, which must include your return flights from Christchurch, accommodation, transport and daily food. The aim of the game is to do as much as you can while staying under your budget. This website will help

1. Attend a workshop to learn how to create a worksheet with formula OR click on the links to get your own way around
2. Create a spreadsheet to record all of your expenses and uses a formula to calculate:
   • the running total of your expenses
   • how much of your budget you still have left to spend.
3. Which cities will you be flying into & out of?
4. Create an itinerary of your adventures so your parents know where they can contact you each day.

WEEK 5

This week you’re off to Berlin - lucky you! Use this website as your source of information for this task.

Your mission is to tick off as many adventures as you can while still remaining inside your budget of → $3 893.

• You only need to purchase a 1 way flight from Christchurch for 1 person
• Use a spreadsheet to record your experiences (including your flight), their cost and 3 interesting things about each experience (all on the spreadsheet)
• Program your own spreadsheet to record your running total as you enter it as well as having it calculate the difference between your total cost and your budget to get a bonus 10 min of free time ticket - (you must be able to explain how it works) to be used at your choice during the week (excludes assessment time).

Week 4

Ok, this week, you are planning your own trip to Argentina! Travelling is always fun when you’re travelling with your bff, so remember to show the cost accordingly for each activity.

Your trip is about the experience, so get the cheapest return flights you can so you can spend your money actually doing things! Answer all questions below, in the spreadsheet that has been added to your SRL folder in Google Drive OR you can choose to do them in your book (this week).

1. What continent is Argentina on?
2. How many different countries are in the continent? List them.
3. Find 3 very cool activities to do while in the country & record the cost of each.
4. The first activity you do will determine the city you will fly into - Which city will you fly into?
5. What is your cost of return flights for both of you?
6. Record the cost of staying for 3 days, near each of your activity locations. REMEMBER - this needs to be for both of you.

Week 3

Just for something different, this week you will be diving the Mid atlantic ridge and taking one of your parents with you so make sure you have the correct costing for your trip. Your budget for the trip is $15 900 - be careful not to go over.

1. What country would you be flying into? Make sure you book return flights for both of you - from Christchurch.
2. You will be doing this dive, how much does it cost in NZD?
3. On the tour, you are likely to see Minke Whales. What are some interesting things about them?
4. You’re so clever, you have timed your trip to coincide with the Secret Solstice 2018 Festival. How much will a festival pass and 3 night hotel stay cost in NZD?
5. If you have money left over, outline what other experiences you could do - make sure they are things you couldn’t do in any other country.

Week 2

Hey hey hey, we’re going on an African safari today! Your parents are very busy people and unfortunately, are not able to attend this trip. Fortunately for you, Linda is available and has offered to chaperone you and your BFF on this trip of a lifetime! You have a budget of $27 830.

1. Select an interesting African Safari tour that is between 10 and 15 days long and outline:
   • How much it costs for all 3 people
   • What game reserves you will be visiting
   • Some of the major experiences on your trip
   • What airport will you need to fly into?
   • Use Google Maps to measure how many kilometres there are between this airport and your current location.
2. Select return flights from Christchurch for all 3 of you.
3. How long are your flights on the way over?
4. While you are in the country, and keeping within your assigned budget, book 2 other experiences you could have while you are there. How much do they cost for all three of you? Make sure they are things you couldn’t do in any other country.

Do you have change? 1 000 bonus points to you!

Week 1

Welcome to Week 1! Hopefully you survived the holidays, actually, you wouldn't be reading this unless you did! Here's your mission for the week:

You and your two best mates are heading to walk the Great Wall of China! You have a budget of $1500 in which you need to purchase:

• return flights from Christchurch to Beijing for you AND your friends
• Entry to the Great Wall (3 people)
• 3 nights accommodation (3 people)
• Transport to and from the Great Wall (3 people)
• Food for 3 days (3 people)

1. Convert your NZD into the local currency so you know how much you have left.
2. If you go over budget, outline how much you will need to borrow from your very frugal, penny pinching, squeak-when-she-walks, aunt.
3. List 12 things that China is known for.

DEBATERS - prepare a 1 min persuasive speech to present to “your aunt” (actually, the class!), convincing her that lending you the money will be beneficial for everyone. This will determine who makes the debating team. Make sure you have evidence to back up your statements!

You’re going to the World Cup with 4 of your best mates!

1. Where is it being held?
2. Source the cheapest return economy flights from Christchurch, for you and your 4 friends.

5. If you each had $1190, how much money will you need to borrow to cover your trip?

WEEK 9

You have $2398NZD and you are off to Liechtenstein!

1. What country is it in?
2. How much money do you get when converting from NZD?
3. What is the capital of Liechtenstein?
4. What is the nearest airport?
5. What is the cheapest return flight from Christchurch?
6. While you’re in the capital, find 4 unique activities to do, within your budget.

Week 8

Wow, you really seem to be on a lucky streak! This week, your application to adopt a bengal tiger has been granted but there’s a catch - you need to go and pick it up! There are some things you need to do:

1. Give your tiger a cool name. You also get to choose if your tiger is a boy or a girl.
2. Your tiger currently resides in the capital of Bhutan - what is it?
3. What are the countries that surround Bhutan
4. If you take $4 280 NZD with you, how much does it convert to in their local currency?
5. Back in New Zealand, what will you need to include in your enclosure to ensure your tiger is happy and safe (including others being safe from your tiger!). Draw and label this clearly (use a whole page), including how many square kilometers it needs to be. NOTE: make sure the size of the area is suitable for the gender of your tiger.
6. How much meat per day do tigers need in order to remain healthy?
7. Find a New Zealand supplier of fresh, raw meat, record their business name & calculate how much it would cost to feed your tiger:
   1. daily
   2. for a year

Week 7

It’s your family reunion next week - in Paris.! There are some things you need to do before you go:

1. Create your actual family tree up to the level of Grand Parents. Make sure you include all links within your family
2. Find the cheapest return flights for you and your family to Paris & record who it’s with and the total cost
3. You will be staying with family for the first 3 nights but need to organise 3 nights in the cheapest accommodation in Montrogue. Record it’s name and cost.
4. Calculate the total cost for flights and accommodation for your trip.

Week 6

Congratulations, you have won the trip of a lifetime to travel to Antarctica in a military Boeing C-17 Globemaster lll. As a result, you don’t need to purchase your flights!

There are some things you need to do & buy before you go. Your budget is $5 509, make sure you don’t go over budget but keep in mind it’s blooming cold there! Record all costs and their running total.

Part A

1. Create a list of equipment you would need to take with you for a 5 night stay (Think - Backpack, base layers, waterproof layers, body, feet, hands & head)
2. You need to purchase - tent, bedding (Think - waterproof, very warm, comfort & size)
3. Snacks - for when you’re out and about with your activities (Think - nutrition & energy!)

Part B

1. Plan up to 4 activities that you would love to do while you’re there (no budget for this - spend what you like here as it’s a once-in-a-lifetime trip but record the cost)
2. Write a brief summary of what each activity entails.

Research your plane, draw a detailed sketch of it and include labels of important features (use technical language! NOTE: believe it or not … we are clever humans and only need to be told about wings & wheels if they have specifications eg: size of wingspan)

Week 5

Wow, you’ve just found out that your long lost aunt is an Abu Dhabi Princess! It’s her shout for you to go and meet her! Naturally, you will be travelling First Class. She doesn’t want you to feel awkward while staying here so she will be paying for your accommodation - you choose it. She also wants to get to know you by accompanying you on any adventures you want (so make sure your cost is for 2 people) - you have no spending limit but you can only be away for 10 days which includes travel time. Don't purchase anything you can't take back with you on the flight.

Outline the activities, costs and flights for your trip. Live it up!

WEEK 4

You’re off to the Winter Olympic Games …

1. Where are they?
2. If you want to see the closing ceremony and 4 other events, how much money will it cost you? (show the breakdown for each event)
3. You might as well make the most of being in this amazing country, what are 3 unique experiences you should have while in the country and how much will they cost?
4. What is the total cost for your trip, including return economy flights exiting from Christchurch?

WEEK 3

This week you’re off to Tokyo! You have $2180 to spend which must include the following:

1. Return flights from Christchurch - with the provider noted.

2. Sumo wrestler challenge

3. Stay in a capsule hotel at least 1 night

4. Find 3 other cool or unusual things to do while in Japan!

5. Create an itemised budget including:

• Flights cost
• Sumo Challenge cost
• Hotel/accommodation
• Food
• Transport around Japan
• What you bought with your spare dosh!
• Other eg: entry to theme parks or attractions/souvenirs etc

ALL work must be CLEARLY set out in your SRL book with headings and dates.

You need to ensure you explain your choices, so that we can fully understand what you have done with your money.
