This week we have a Maths Snapshot that will be completed on Monday morning (from 9:20am).

We are starting Volume calculations for rectangular prisms.

There is also a quick Maths Buddy task on the Short Division algorithm.

Calculating Volume

To calculate volume you multiply height x width x depth. The unit is centimetres cubed.

For example, for this prism the height is 5, the width is 9 and the depth is 8.

To calculate volume I would go: 8 x 5 x 9

8 x 5 =40 40 x 9 = 360 cm3

There are TWO parts to complete this week. I have put both up so you can see what needs to be completed by the end of Wednesday.

Watch the Area of Triangles video and complete the task sheet. Copy the shapes into your book and show your working.

Mark the sheet when you are finished, and review any problems you get wrong.

Don't start this until we have our Tuesday Maths workshop :)

Watch the video to jog your memory of the strategy.

Complete these division problems in your book using the Split Strategy. Show your working. Make sure you ask a teacher if you get stuck.

Area and Perimeter

Only one task is going up this week (short week). This is an area and perimeter task.

There is also a MathsBuddy task - a review of mental multiplication.

Watch the area video so you know how to work out these problems. Complete the work in your book and take a photo.

The working should look like this:

Area = 4 x 7 Perimeter = 4 + 7 + 4 + 7

= 28 cm2 = 22cm

Ask me, Mrs Morrie or Miss Happl for the marking sheet to mark these when you are finished. Fix any questions you may have wrong.

This is another refresher of the Multiplication algorithm. Make sure you know how to do this - ask me (or Mrs Morrie or Miss Happl) if you are not sure.

We are looking at Perimeter again - how far it is around the outside of a shape.

This time the shapes have sides with different lengths. Watch the video to see what to do. You can use a paper copy of the task if it helps you to work out the side lengths.

Part 2 of Maths this week is more complex perimeter. This is using larger numbers so you will need to use a multiplication written algorithm to work it out.

Task One:

Hi team. This is the new task for Wednesday to Friday.

I have also added another task to MathsBuddy. A number of you have been a bit slackipoo with this, so check out your emails for your log in details and complete the tasks (Task 1 is decimals, Task 2 is subtraction). This is revision for you :)

Please read this CAREFULLY for the BEEHIVE task. Your goal is to make your way from the left side to the right side, one hexagon at a time.

Start with 4,875 or 1,625. Each hexagon number is a product of two of the numbers in the Garden of Numbers section (there are 9 of these numbers). You will need to try a whole lot of combos of these numbers in 2 digit multiplication algorithms (e.g. 95 x 45) to get the numbers in the hexagons.

In your books, list each hexagon you used in your path, and the two numbers you had to use to make the number. Show me at least 5 of these calculations as algorithms in your book. (you can use a calculator to cheat on the rest!)

e.g.

1. 4875 = 15 x 35

2. 1925 = 15 x 25

(I'm lying on these by the way).

It might be easier to print it out if you can.

You will have received your login details for Maths Buddy in an email. Log in and you should see a Tasks menu at the top of the screen. This week you have one task to complete by Wednesday (I'll set a new task on Wednesday afternoon). This is some decimal revision. It starts easy and gets a little harder.

We are now looking at multiplication. The first strategy is a mental strategy called the Split strategy. Watch the video carefully and answer the 10 questions in your maths book, FOLLOWING THE LAYOUT that I have explained in the video. This will be marked on Friday.

These strategies will be handy when we start looking at calculating area in measurement.

10. Bob rides 33km every day on his bike. How far has he gone after 8 days?
