I was given this interesting information from a music dealer who sells on eBay:
My Gretsch Commander is all Ebony and was manufactured in Brooklyn NY about 1940. I also have a Silver Gretsch clarinet called the Pathfinder. I treasure both of these instruments as they have good German craftsmanship. They are made a bit heavier than the more popular French clarinets.

One can see here that Gretsch was a distributor who sold instruments made by more than one French Stencil maker. It is possible that some German clarinets were also marketed by Gretsch. I wonder about them actually being made in Brooklyn.
