CMS Families,
It is hard to believe we are already halfway through April and started our last quarter (side note - ask your student how their new special area class is going!). Our Quarter 3 report cards are now live for you to review on Parent Portal. Please see below for some tips about life with middle schoolers in springtime and our final exam schedule.
Spring is typically the time when middle schoolers may test boundaries, not think before doing things, and check out a bit from school. Please continue to encourage routines at home for work completion and talk to your student(s) about appropriate school behavior. This includes appropriate language at school/on the bus, following the cell phone policy, and keeping their hands to themselves. It is also a good time of year for families to revisit the amount of social media access and/or screen time their student has in order to set up expectations before summer hits.
We ask that parents support our efforts to encourage the consumption of water during the day. Our student handbook states that energy drinks are not allowed at CMS. Students with energy drinks or pouches will be asked to dispose of them. Please see this article about the health dangers these drinks pose for our students.
We continue to have issues with drivers in our lots not following traffic procedures and laws. Please drive slow, stop at crosswalks, and take your time any time you are in our lots or arrival/dismissal lines.
Our final exam schedule can be found HERE. Some items to note from that schedule:
Please note that our last student attendance day will be Tuesday, June 24th.
The last full day of attendance will be Tuesday, June 17th.
Exams will run from Wednesday, June 18th to Tuesday, June 24th (please note there is no school on June 19th).
June 18, 20, and 23rd - 6th and 7th graders attend exams in the morning and 8th graders in the afternoon.
June 24th - all grades will come in for the morning only.
For those of you familiar with Clarence High School procedures where students can leave exams after a certain amount of time, it is important to note that we do not do that here at CMS and students should remain for the entire exam window.
Speaking of the end of the year, 8th grade parents should be sure to check out the information sent to them on April 23rd regarding our 8th grade picnic and dance. It can also be found on the school website under the 8th grade house subpage.
Be sure to check out the other “buttons” and sidebars below which include our "Who Should I Call?" cheat sheet and CMS Resource Guide for Families.
Thank you for your support,
Ashley Dreibelbis
Principal
The CMS PTO has moved communications to Parent Square! Be sure to connect with them on your Parent Square account by using this QR code to join their group.
We now have one central number so you don't have to keep track of all the house offices, attendance, nurse, etc. Just put this number as a contact in your phone and you will be good to go!
We have Headquarters (homeroom) programming to support students' social-emotional needs, develop executive functioning skills in students, and build our CMS community.
Mondays: Students have their own Student Portal accounts and check their grades/look for missing work. TIP: Ask your students each Tuesday how things are going at school!
Tuesdays: Community-building day.
Wednesdays: Community-building day.
Thursdays: School-wide reading day.
Fridays: CMS Newscast to celebrate all our accomplishments and ongoings!
Each week, we have the following theme days:
Monday - #ClarenceProud Day
Wear Red and Black or School Gear!
Wednesday - House Color Day. While we are #OneCommunity, we also like to celebrate our grade-level houses. Students at each grade level should wear:
6th - Green
7th - Blue
8th - Red
Friday - #Buffalove
Wear your Buffalo gear
Please be sure your student's Chromebook gets charged each night.
Students should also bring chargers with them to school each day.
If you are planning on picking up your student early for any reason, please send a note with your student to give to attendance as soon as they arrive. This will make our early dismissal process more efficient.
Early Drop-Off begins at 7:55 am in the front bus loop. Students dropped off before then will not be supervised.
Please send your student with a water bottle to school. Be sure the bottle is labeled with the student's name! We have fill stations throughout the building thanks to our PTO!
