Cornhole News

October 28 Update:

Welcome back from mid-term break! It's lovely cornhole weather! Be on the lookout for details about this year's first tournament!

October 4 Update:

Cornhole made its first appearance of the year today (see photo below). The boards and bags seem to be in good shape, as were Mr. Pollock and Mr. Jones, who took two out of three games from the fearsome math duo He Laoshi and Chenyuan Laoshi. Other students were overheard expressing unrestrained exhilaration upon seeing the famous game for the first time.

September 4 Update:

With the 2018-19 school year now underway, excitement is building everywhere among diehard cornhole fans for what promises to be the best season of HZCIS cornhole yet. Stay tuned for details!

June 12 Update:

With the support of a boisterous crowd, Petrus and Nathan pulled off the impossible today, as they defeated Chenyuan and Guannan in the championship game to take home the first ever HZCIS Cornhole Cup.

The students jumped out to a massive 12-1 lead behind Nathan's early 4-hole round. Not used to playing from behind, the math team was clearly rattled. After a small comeback, the teachers pulled to within 15-5, but Nathan and Petrus stayed calm under pressure, winning by a final score of 21-8.

The Jennifer Grace MVP Award was given to Nathan for his early onslaught that gave the students a huge cushion.

That's all for the 2017-2018 school year! Thanks everyone for playing and for your support in this inaugural year!

June 11 Update:

Chenyuan and Guannan finally had an opponent that pushed them, but they emerged victorious from yesterday's matchup with Sam and Arwin by a score of 21-13.

The winner of this year's Cornhole Cup will be decided in tomorrow's championship match, which will start at 9:00am. The math team is the clear favorite, but don't tell that to Petrus and Nathan, who have shown that they are up for the challenge and ready to pull off a stunning upset.

See you all at the match, and please arrive early for the best seats!

June 9 Update:

It was quite the weekend in Cornhole news, as several key matches were played on the CIS retreat in Anhui.

With a massive crowd watching and cheering, Tsz Shun and Alan were the latest victim of the unstoppable math team duo of Guannan and Chenyuan, which has been a force all season and has left a blistering path of destruction.

On the other side of the bracket, Nathan and Petrus first beat Aiden and Nicholas, and then followed that up with a convincing win over Anna and Annabel. They will move onto the championship, where they'll await a scary team of teachers.

June 3 Update:

The second round is underway and things are really starting to heat up. Mr. Jones and Song Laoshi were feeling pretty confident going into their matchup with Sam and Arwin, but it turns out Arwin's many hours of practice paid off handsomely. At one point he even tossed FOUR straight bags in the hole! As Sam nicely summed it up, "It was all Arwin."

In response, his modest teammate said, "This wasn't just me. It was our win," ...which left everyone within earshot thoroughly confused.

The duo look ahead to a probable showdown with Guannan and Chenyuan in the Cornhole Cup semifinals....that is unless Tsz Shun and Alan can pull off a stunning upset of the math team juggernaut.

May 29 Update:

With a victory today by Nathan and Petrus over Ethan and Ric by a score of 21-5, we have officially completed the opening round of the 2018 Cornhole Cup. There have been moments of joy and moments of heartbreak, but that is of course within the nature of this glorious game.

On to round 2!

May 28 Update:

With the first round nearly complete, we have several more scores to report! Mr. Jones and Song Laoshi took down Kuang Wen Laoshi and Liu Jia Laoshi, 21-6, setting up a thrilling second round matchup with Sam and Arwin, who advanced with an emphatic 21-2 victory over Stephen and Clancy.

Things weren't so easy for Aiden and Nicholas, who, through sheer grit overcame the fearsome duo of Savannah and Evelyn by a score of 21-13.

And finally, in perhaps the most watched game of the week, Mr. Grace and Wang Laoshi bravely stepped up to battle Guannan Laoshi and Chenyuan Laoshi, two names that strike fear in every corner of the CIS campus. With a thunderous crowd behind them, team Grace/Wang stormed out to a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, it just wasn't enough of a cushion, as they ended up losing 23-1.

May 25 Update:

After two blowouts, we finally got a real barn burner (look it up) of a cornhole match, as Phillip and Mark came back from near defeat to pull out a victory over their worthy opponents, Jade and Maxine. "That was so intense!" yelled Mark after the match in a moment of unbridled euphoria.

May 22 Update:

WHOA! Watch out everyone. There's a new sheriff in town. Tsz Shun and Alan are proving to be a major force, as they displayed their corn-tossing prowess in a devastating 24-1 victory against Malin and Kate. Their probable showdown against Guannan and Chenyuan in the quarterfinals just got a lot more interesting...

May 20 Update:

The Cornhole Cup is officially underway! After a brief opening ceremony led by Mr. Jones, Anna and Annabel cruised to a 24-10 victory against fellow Cornhole newbies Joshua and Casey. The "Straight A's," as they're becoming known around campus, became the first team to advance, thanks to Anna's signature "leg kick" move.

As always, please see the Results page for matchups and updated tournament results. Also, a Tournament Rules section has been added, which explains how to set up your game and report the scores to me. Get cornholing!

May 18 Update:

At this point we have 11 teams registered, which is fine because the last few days have been too hot to play anyway. Hang in there, fellow cornholers! Sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for.

At the moment, the cornhole boards seem to have found a home on the first floor of the academic building, outside the science classrooms. Feel free to get some practice throws in, but please make sure to take care of the boards and bags.

May 15 Update:

9 teams have registered out of a possible 16. Keep those signups coming!

With the extreme heat, cornhole practice will be postponed for a few days

May 14 Update:

Registration officially launched at 7:30am during this morning's meeting. As of this writing (10:25am) we have 6 teams signed up. Spots filling up fast!

The cornhole board will be out between the buildings today after lunch. Come practice and get a good sweat in.
