The 2nd grade Social Studies curriculum encourages young learners to think "outside the box" and prove their thinking through hands-on activities and engaging learning experiences.  The curriculum is based on 5 units: Government & Civics, Learning About the Past, Communities, Economics & Geography.  Each unit is broken down into 10 lesson, 30 minute lessons followed by a review and an end of unit assessment.  Each lesson is designed to take 1 -2 days to complete and the whole unit will take several weeks to complete.

We will begin with studying Government & Civics.  In this unit we will study rules vs laws, the principles of citizenship, the rights and responsibilities of being a citizen, the purpose of the government, different levels of government, how we can participate in government and finally taxes.  As part of a culminating activity we will take everything we have learned and use it to participate in a community service project.  How can we be informed, active members of our community? We know that there are ways to make our community better.
