The Value of Self Expression and Creativity

Culture is the arts elevated to a set of beliefs.

Thomas Wolfe.

Our PYP Exhibition journey started from self expression, identity and culture. Those are the keywords that we use to reflect the How We Express Ourselves description: An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic. We brainstormed ideas and issues from those keywords, and we collected newspaper clippings to make it contextual.

To deepen the understanding about what culture and expression are, the whole year 5 students went to Ubud, in Bali island. In Ubud, they went to Arma Museum, where they got painting and batik workshop, and exposure to international and local paintings. Students learned how to play Gamelan and to perform traditional Bali dance.

Students had a session from Pak Yuka Narendra, a socio-culturalist lecturer to find out more about cultural diversity. Pak Adoy from Bonita and the husBand, also share his expertise in self expression. Pak Adoy asked the students to draw their profile on a piece of paper and put it on their back, it is analogy of social media profile. Others who like the profile can comment or just make a check mark as a sign that they like the profile. Then Pak Adoy ask students in group to perform a 2 minutes expression in any form. It was fun!

Then, the students are grouped by their interest. They started to investigate each issues. The group investigating Indonesian entertainment, went to meet a lot of movie maker, movie directors, and animators. They went to Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (Komisi Penyiaran Indonesia), Net TV, Global TV, Lanting animation, SAE Institute Indonesia. They interviewed Nia Dinata (director) and Riri Riza (movie director). The group investigating traditional arts went to Dolanan, a house of traditional games. They went to see Pak Imam (ethnomusicology), and had a traditional music session with our music teacher Om Arief.

The group investigating on how people with disability can express themselves, they went to YPAC and Cheshire Indonesia, and met several disabled artist such as Xiau Pinpin, Ruben, Fataya Azzahra.

Students are also got the chance to interview Giring Nidji, Endah from Endah n Resa, and Tohpati, Popzzle, Clara Ng, and Kojek Rap Betawi. One group investigating games had a chance to meet digital game developers in Matata Studio, and collaborating with Ayo Main. All those investigations and meetings with all amazing people inspired students to produce their own art and events.

The groups that are investigating Indonesian entertainment, developed a movie campaign to raise awareness on choosing entertainment wisely. They learned how to plan write a script, to shoot and to edit a movie.

The traditional music group learned how to play traditional music, learned how to use Garageband to compose and mix music, and learned how edit the video clip. They called themselves “Dynamic Indonesia”.
