Through reading, writing, speaking and listening, students learn to question, empathise, and think critically. Our curriculum is designed to spark curiosity. From classic literature to contemporary texts, we encourage students to explore diverse stories, cultures and ideas.
We nurture a love of reading while also equipping students with the analytical skills needed for academic success and life beyond the classroom. Creativity is valued: students are supported to experiment with language, express original ideas and develop their own writing style.
Above all, we want every young person to leave our department not only skilled but inspired — ready to engage with the world as thoughtful, articulate and confident individuals.
We run several clubs within the English department which are open to all year groups:
Writing club
Debating club
Reading club: Carnegie Shadowing Group
School magazine
We offer our A level students a variety of opportunities to extend and exceed their learning in lessons. In addition to curated reading lists, recommended specialist media and resources on existing and emerging career paths within the field, we also host online courses and lectures delivered at university level and support students in entering a variety of prestigious academic competitions.
We also have two student-led societies which are open to all in years 12-13. These societies meet on a fortnightly basis, offering revision support for key areas in the A level courses but also to explore areas beyond the A level curricula.
Furthermore, our A level students frequently offer support to lower-school students in their English studies, including one-to-one tuition and a ‘7-8-9’ lunchtime club for students targeting the top GCSE grades in English.
