GCSE Art and GCSE Textiles are popular subjects within the school and the rooms are always alive with activity and buzzing with students – at lunchtimes as well as during lessons.
A Level options in Fine Art, Digital Photography or Textiles are popular allowing many sophisticated and talented students to follow onto specialist degree courses in the creative arts.
A high-quality Art and Design education should engage, inspire and challenge students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. They should also know how Art and Design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture and creativity of society. Creative confidence grows through curiosity, resilience and the courage to have a go and keep going when outcomes aren’t certain.
Throughout the year, the department selects and enters a variety of specific competitions and exhibitions, spanning diverse mediums such as photography, illustration, and poster design for clients like the NHS.
Educational visits are integrated into the curriculum, with local gallery excursions mandatory for GCSE and A-Level students. During ACE week, students get the opportunity to visit specific regional attractions and places of interest, including the Tate St Ives, the Eden Project, and the Plymouth Aquarium.
The department facilitates artist enrichment days, where students collaborate with local designers and artists specialising in fields ranging from ceramics and mixed media drawing to digital photography and garment design.
The department maintains a proactive careers program, frequently inviting alumni students to give insightful talks and showcase their professional portfolios, covering careers from interior architecture to fashion design.
Practical application extends to school productions, where A-Level art students design and paint the stage sets and contribute to costume design and prop making.
Termly lunchtime clubs ensure the department is a busy and thriving space. These offerings vary annually, encompassing activities like origami and Christmas crafts, textiles, digital photography workshops for lower school students, or simply providing an open studio environment for students to catch up on work or engage creatively.
