Health with Ms. Butts
8th Grade:
Health (Ms. Butts)
Happy Spring!! During March, we focused on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Immune System Health. Students explored the history of HIV/AIDS, stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, myths/facts about HIV/AIDS, the biology of HIV/AIDS, and how to prevent HIV/AIDS. Questions to consider discussing with your child: What is the history of HIV/AIDS? In what ways does stigma regarding HIV/AIDS impact us? How does someone contract HIV? What is AIDS? How have education and prevention efforts impacted the number of infections/cases of HIV/AIDS?
Along with studying Immune System Health, we had a special guest speaker to discuss vaping prevention. Jackie Rodrigues, a Respiratory Therapist at Northwell Health, presented to each 8th-grade health class on the dangers of vaping, how to quit vaping, and how to advocate to others regarding vaping prevention.
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your ongoing support
7th Grade Health:
We started our lessons on analyzing influences/making decisions, risks, and consequences. Students are selecting a risk to explore and research in collaboration with our Library Media Specialist, Ms. Fuerst. Students have selected a risk, are gathering reliable content and questions surrounding the risk, and are making a claim backed by evidence in a speech/PSA/song or poem. Students have created MLA-style bibliographies in NoodleTools to cite their sources and document their research notes. These important skills are essential for our students as they navigate multiple resources to find information, especially in the ever-changing world of health. After the Spring break, students will share their work with classmates and complete peer reviews for one another. Please reach out with any concerns or questions. Wishing you all a wonderful Spring season!
