6th Grade Expectations

In our classrooms, we promote an atmosphere of safety, trust and respect. We work hard to build a sense of community among our students. We value cooperation and collaboration, both in our classrooms and as students work with their peers.

We strongly believe that 6th grade is where each child learns to become independent learners and thinkers. This is the year for each child to figure out what works best for them. Please help us make this transition successful for your child by encouraging independence and perseverance through these sometimes difficult middle school years. Sixth grade is a year where students are expected to start advocating for themselves and contacting the teacher when they have a question or concern. We appreciate your support as we help your child move towards independence in their learning.

Planners: Every student has received a student planner and it will be used to send reminders and updates home. (During the year, extra planners are available for a fee, if a student loses one.) All homework assignments and important due dates can be found in the planner.

Homework: Homework provides a way for your child to practice skills and learn new concepts. All students should have a cumulative amount of 30 minutes (or more) at home on Imagine Math during the week. At least 30 minutes should be completed during the morning Learning Lab time throughout the week, as well.

Snack: Students are given a working snack time. However, please be aware that this must be a healthy peanut-free snack. Many severe allergies require us to be extra diligent. Please help us make sure there are no peanut snacks in your child’s lunch box. Please be aware that water is the only beverage allowed in the classroom. If possible, please send your child with a reusable water bottle (no glass, please) to help limit trips out of class.

**Students should be practicing math concepts each night. Refer to the Resource Section, under the Math Class tab on this website. This section contains topic-specific websites and standards from each math unit, as well as a copy of class notes.**
