리처드 뮬러 교수

리처드 뮬러 교수는 콜럼비아대학교에서 학사학위를, 그리고 UC버클리에서 박사학위를 받았고 1978년부터 버클리에서 교수로 재직하고 있다. 그는 소립자물리학으로 박사학위를 받았지만 지금은 천체물리학과 지구물리학을 연구하고 있다. 그는 중성미자의 연구 및 핵에너지 분야의 전문가다. 1999년에는 UC버클리의 우수 교육자 상을 수상하였고, 대학원생들과 마이크로로봇을 상용화할 수 있는 마이크로모터를 세계 최초로 개발하여 화제가 되었으며 수많은 젊은 스타 교수를 제자로 배출하였다. ‘천재상’이라 불리는 맥아더 펠로우십을 수상해 화제를 모았고, PBS와 BBC 스페셜과 다큐멘터리에 수차례 출연한 저명한 학자다. 미국 연방 정부의 고위 과학고문을 지냈으며 현재 미국 국방자문의 일원이기도 하다. 그가 쓴 <대통령을 위한 에너지 강의>와 <미래 대통령을 위한 물리학>은 비전공자를 대상으로 쓴 베스트셀러로, 2009년 UC버클리 재학생이 뽑은 최고 명강의로 선정되기도 했다. 팟캐스트와 유튜브의 교육 채널에서도 들을 수 있는 그의 강의는 강좌 하나에만 70만 명이 넘게 시청하는 인기 강의로, 핫이슈로 떠오른 현실 과학 분야에 대한 전 세계 지식인들의 관심이 얼마나 폭발적인지를 직접적으로 보여 주고 있다.

HE IS A FELLOW OF THE APS AND OF THE AAAS, AND HIS AWARDS INCLUDE THE TEXAS INSTRUMENTS FOUNDERS PRIZE, THE NSF ALAN T. WATERMAN AWARD, AND A MACARTHUR FOUNDATION PRIZE FELLOWSHIP.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

I received my Ph.D. in elementary particle physics, but have since moved into astrophysics (anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background; supernovae for cosmology) and geophysics (origin of the earth’s magnetic flips, impact catastrophes, glacial cycles, red sprites). Some of the most fascinating questions of science lie not on the extremes of our ability to probe, but in the cracks between well-studied disciplines. I prefer experimental work, but will do theory when it is needed.

Current Projects

Lunar impacts: We have been granted several grams of lunar soil; from these we have extracted microtektites (glassy melt droplets) from distant lunar impacts. We are using Ar/Ar dating techniques to date the impacts. Our initial results showed that the cratering rate on the moon (and presumably on the Earth) gradually decreased over the past 3 billion years – but then suddenly increased just 0.4 billion years ago. This result is sufficiently surprising that we are now planning to repeat the measurement at a different lunar site.

Glacial cycles: We have been studying the cycles of the ice ages using data collected from sea-floor cores, Greenland ice, and other terrestrial sources. We have published a careful spectral analysis that shows that the “standard” Milankovitch theory for the glacial cycles is wrong, and we have proposed an alternative explanation: that the cycles are driven by extraterrestrial accretion. We are conducting several experimental programs that should elucidate the cause of the glacial cycles. We are making iridium measurements in both Greenland ice and in Pacific Ocean sea-floor cores, in order to measure variations in extraterrestrial accretion.

I recently completed a book titled “The Ice Ages and their Astronomical Origins,” coauthored by Gordon MacDonald. This book is intended to be a complete introduction for any student (or faculty member) interested in pursuing research in ancient climate.

Permian/Triassic extinctions: I am working with Walter Alvarez to try to understand what happened 250 million years ago, in the catastrophe that exceeded the more familiar Cretaceous/Tertiary event. Among other things, we are investigating the extent to which buckyballs (Carbon-60 molecules) are reliable tracers of impacts.

Nemesis search: We continue to search for the hypothesized solar companion star, using an automated telescope built by our group.

얀 페테르 발케넨더는 네덜란드 전 총리이자, 현재는 지속가능성장을 위한 다국적 기업연대인 네덜란드 지속가능성장 연합의 이사장으로 활동하면서 환경과 경제성장의 접점을 찾으려고 노력하고 있다.

암스테르담 자유대학교에서 사학과 법학을 전공한 뒤 보수정당인 기독교민주당 산하 연구소에서 재직하면서 유럽의 경제개발협력과 기술혁신, 그리고 유럽통합을 연구했다. 1992년 법학박사를 취득한 뒤에는 모교에서 교수로 재직하다 1998년부터 기독교민주당 소속으로 정계에 입문해 재정부문 대변인으로 활동했다. 2002년에는 총리로 취임해2010년까지 8년동안 네덜란드를 이끌어 왔다.

총리에서 물러난 2010년 11월부터 지금까지 네덜란드 에라스뮈스 대학교에서 경제학과 법학을 가르치고 있다.


Professor Jan Peter Balkenende (born in 1956), former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, has been Professor of Governance, Institutions and Internationalisation at Erasmus University Rotterdam since 2010.

Between 2011 and 2016 he has been a partner at EY, focusing on corporate responsibility, international affairs and areas at the interface of the public and private sectors. Since 1 July 2016 he has been External Senior Advisor to EY.

He also chairs the International Advisory Board of Rotterdam, the Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition, the Germany-Netherlands Forum and the Major Alliance.

Jan Peter Balkenende studied economic and social history, as well as Dutch law, at VU University Amsterdam. He obtained a doctorate in law with a thesis entitled ‘Government Regulation and Civil Society Organisations’. He subsequently worked at the Netherlands’ Universities Council, the Research Institute of the political party CDA and as a part-time professor at VU University Amsterdam. He was a member of the Amstelveen municipal council and of the Lower House of the Dutch Parliament. From 2002 to 2010, Jan Peter Balkenende was Prime Minister and Minister of General Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In that capacity, he also served as Chair of the Innovation Platform. Before becoming Prime Minster, he published a number of books and articles on a range of subjects, including innovation, development cooperation, European integration, public-private partnerships, social security, government finance, poverty, economic growth, confidence in the economy and the role of the business sector in society. Jan Peter Balkenende received five honorary doctorates from universities in Hungary, Japan, South Korea and the United States.

Billy Pizer

2011년 듀크대학교의 샌포드 정책대학교 교수로 임용된 파이저 교수는 미국의 환경정책을 전문적으로 연구 및 조사하는 니콜라스 환경정책솔루션 연구원에서 연구위원으로도 재직하고 있다. 파이저 교수는 청정에너지 관련 공공정책이 민간부문의 투자를 어떻게 효과적으로 이끌어 낼 수 있는지, 환경규제와 기후정책이 생산비용과 경쟁력에 어떤 영향을 주는지, 그리고 시장기반의 환경정책이 많은 이해관계자들의 니즈를 어떻게 충족시키는지를 연구하고 있다.

2008년부터 2011년 까지 파이저 교수는 미국 재무부에서 환경에너지 부차관보를 역임하면서 미국의 국내외 환경 및 에너지 어젠다를 전문적으로 다루는 신생부처를 만들었다. 재무부 부차관보로 임명되기 전에는 미래자원 연구원(RESOURCES FOR THE FUTURE)에서 10년 이상 연구위원으로 재직했다. 2011년부터 2002년까지 1년간 백악관 경제자문 위원회에서 환경전문 이코노미스트로 재직하기도 했다.

파이저 교수는 존스홉킨스 대학교와 스탠포드대학교에서 교수생활을 시작했다. 노스캐롤라이나 대학교에서 물리학으로 학사학위를 받은 뒤 하버드 대학교에서 석사와 박사를 받았다.


Billy Pizer joined the faculty of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University in the fall of 2011. He also was appointed a faculty fellow in the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, a nonpartisan institute at Duke that focuses on finding solutions to some of the nation's most pressing environmental challenges. His current research examines how public policies to promote clean energy can effectively leverage private sector investments, how environmental regulation and climate policy can affect production costs and competitiveness, and how the design of market-based environmental policies can address the needs of different stakeholders.


From 2008 to 2011, Pizer was deputy assistant secretary for environment and energy in the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he created and led a new office responsible for the department’s role in the domestic and international environment and energy agenda of the United States. Prior to that, Pizer was a researcher at Resources for the Future (RFF), a nonpartisan think tank, for more than a decade. He served as senior economist for the environment at the White House Council of Economic Advisers from 2001 to 2002.


Pizer's academic experience includes visiting professorships at The Johns Hopkins University (1997-1999) and Stanford University (2000-2001). He has published more than thirty peer-reviewed articles and books and holds a PhD and MA in economics from Harvard University and BS in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Daval is founder and CEO of kiloWattsol, the most experienced French Solar expert and a respected European Technical Advisor in the field of photovoltaic projects with a track record exceeding 5GWp world-wide. Daval is an Electronic engineer and former Director EMEA of a world leading manufacturer of tools for the electronics industry. Xavier Daval is vice-president of the French Renewable Energies industry association (SER - Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables) and president of its solar commission (SOLER). He seats at the board of the Global Solar Council. Besides, Daval is associated teacher with ENTPE Engineering school and Lyon I University and guest lecturer for Entrepreneurship at EM-Lyon, one of Europe’s top 10 business schools.
