5th Grade Handbook
2025-2026
About Mrs. Rosso
Welcome to 5th grade! I started teaching second grade in 2012, and I came to Southview in 2018, where I also taught second grade. In 2020, I made the jump up to fifth grade! I am confident it is going to be a fun year full of learning and new adventures!
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my husband, Reese, our son, Ronnie, our daughter, Rosie, and our cat, Tucker. You will often find me going on walks with my family, checking out the local attractions Chippewa Falls has to offer, reading, or chasing after my kiddos.
It is important to me that you are able to contact me should you have any questions or concerns. Please feel free to reach me at school via phone or through email. Should you get my voicemail, I will try to call back as soon as possible. Email is usually the best way to reach me as I try to check it often.

About Mr. Pukrop
I’m beginning to feel like the ol’ man on the block! This is my 23rd year of teaching 5th here at Southview. I’ve enjoyed my time here and look forward to this school year!
Outside of school, I really like spending time with my family and friends, traveling to new places, bowhunting, working out, watching my daughters become young adults, and various forms of fantasy football.
It is important to me that you are able to contact me should you have any questions or concerns. Please feel free to reach me at school via phone or through email. Should you get my voicemail, I will try to call back as soon as possible. Email is usually the best way to reach me as I try to check it often.

Fifth Grade Curriculum:
Welcome to fifth grade! Every grade level is a new experience for both the students and the parents. The following information should help you better understand what we do in fifth grade, what is expected of the student, and what parents can do to help.
Literacy:
Our literacy instruction, including reading, writing, grammar, and spelling, will come from a resource titled Wit and Wisdom. This all-encompassing curriculum will provide students with an opportunity to build background knowledge in a variety of topics. Through these topics, we will explore different aspects of literacy, including reading and understanding a variety of texts, writing in response to different prompts, and expanding on our writing through the processes of editing and revising.
Math Curriculum:
We will once again use the Bridges curriculum. Topics covered this year include (but are not limited to): adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals, fractions, and multi-digit numbers; comparing decimals; finding the area of rectangles; finding the volume and surface area of rectangular prisms. These skills will be practiced in isolation, as well as in the context of real world problems.
When our class starts a new unit, there will be a family letter sent home explaining the current strategies that students are working on. Additionally, each assessment will be sent home after it is corrected. Please sign and return all tests by the due date given to your student.
Science Curriculum:
Our science instruction comes from a curriculum titled Building Blocks of Science. We will cover the structures and properties of matter, matter and energy in ecosystems, and Earth and space systems. While there are some opportunities for hands-on science, these will have to be taken into consideration with the current situation of our classrooms. Mrs. Rosso teaches science for both classrooms.
Social Studies Curriculum:
Mr. Pukrop is the 5th grade social studies instructor. Topics covered include (but are not limited to) regions of the United States and history from Wisconsin’s statehood to Native American rights.
Classroom Guidelines:
Learning and Behavior Feedback:
Learning and behavior feedback will typically take place through email. Feedback will also be sent in any graded work (paper or digital) that comes home.
Conferences:
Fall conferences will be November 4 and 6. Spring conferences will be March 3 and 5.
Homework:
Students will have due dates on several assignments each week. Generally, they will have time to complete the assignments here in school. However, there will be times that students will be expected to complete work at home. Please let me know if your child consistently has more than one hour of homework a night.
Assignment Notebooks:
It is your child’s responsibility to keep their assignments written in their assignment notebook. Assignments will be posted on our assignment board in the classroom, as well as on our assignment board on our class website. Assignment notebooks should be signed each night and returned to school the following morning. This is also a great place to leave me any notes (end of day changes, early pick-ups, etc.).
Checkbooks/Fines/Auctions:
Each student will receive a checkbook (on Google Sheets) at the beginning of the year. On the first day of each week, students will make a $20 deposit. Throughout the week, they may earn other deposits for exceptional work (behaviors, effort, etc). Additionally, students may receive fines. Students will receive a $10 fine for each late assignment. Other fines will be discussed in a class meeting and determined within the first week of school. I will communicate the class’s decision with parents.
Students will track their fines and deposits throughout the week. On Fridays, we will have a weekly auction where students can spend their money on a variety of prizes or classroom experiences. All students (regardless of how many fines are earned throughout the week) will be able to participate in the auction with whatever funds they have available.
Friday Free Time:
At the end of the day on Friday, students will have the opportunity to go outside (weather permitting) for Friday Free Time. This is essentially an extra recess.
If a student has received $10 or more in fines (including for missing an assignment), they will have detention during this time. They will write a letter about why they are in detention, as well as what they will do to keep it from happening again. Then they will read silently until Friday Free Time is over.
Detention letters should be signed and returned by the following Monday. If not, they will count as another late assignment.
Contracts:
Periodically, we will send home contracts for students to participate in special events. The conditions of the contract will state what is required for participation (i.e. no more than two missing assignments for the duration of the contract). They will be sent home to be reviewed and signed by parents before they take effect.
If a student receives a strike against a contract, I will note it on the original contract within two days of the offense. The contract will be sent home again for parent review and signature and should be returned to school. If a student breaks a contract, the contract will once again be sent home. I will also communicate via email that the student is no longer able to participate.
Birthday Treats:
Students that would like to may bring in a birthday treat on the day of his/her birthday or week of birthday if it falls over the weekend. Students with summer birthdays can bring treats in on their half birthday, or they will be given a specific day towards the end of the year to celebrate their birthday at school. Please send snacks that are prepackaged and individually wrapped. Please be sure to bring enough treats for each student in our class to receive. If there are any allergies in our class, there will be a note sent home.
Morning Drop Off
Students being dropped off should be dropped off at the playground between 7:20-7:35 AM. Please do not arrive prior to 7:20.
Bus Deviations:
If your child rides the bus and will be taking a different bus for any reason, please make sure the bus deviation is filled out with the bus company PRIOR to the requested date.
Free and Reduced Lunch:
Please consider applying for Free and Reduced Lunch. While lunches will be free for all students, more completed applications could mean more funding for our school.
Lunch Balances:
All lunch accounts should be kept at a positive balance.
Volunteering and Background Checks:
Any parent interested in chaperoning a field trip must complete a background check. Email your child’s teacher or contact the office for more information.
